The KZN Coastal hockey teams to contest the SASHOC National u18 Inter-Provincial Hockey Tournament at Hilton College, from Sunday, 28 June, until Saturday, 4 July, have been announced, and they make for interesting reading.
The in-form Northwood Knights have only one representative in the Coastal A-side, Luc Boyall, the top goalscorer at the u16 IPT last year. They also had six players named in the B-side, which is a reflection of their youth and their outstanding teamwork. Boyall is in grade 11 only.
Durban High School (DHS), with six, has the most players in the A-side, while Clifton College has four. They drew 1-1 on Wednesday evening. Westville Boys’ High also provides four players, and Kearsney College captain Keegan de Jager completes the squad.
The Coastal B-team features the six Northwood boys, four from DHS, three from Clifton, two from Glenwood, and one from Kearsney.
Bo Mokoena (Westville), Chris Abrahams (DHS), Georg Wolhuter (Clifton), Keegan de Jager (Kearsney), Luc Boyall (Northwood), and Ryde Brisset (Clifton, feature photo) have all previously been selected for national field hockey sides. Brisset’s return to action after missing the 2025 season following shoulder surgery is a welcome boost for the Coastal team.
Abrahams, Brisset, and Wolhuter were all selected for the SA u18A side after the SASHOC Indoor Hockey Inter-Provincial Tournament in December 2025, while Tye Milne (Clifton) and Tyhil Naidoo (Westville) were included in the SA u18 B team.
Boyall made the SA u16A side, along with Coastal B-team players, Dylan Forbes (Kearsney) and goalkeeper Dean Hart (Northwood). Caleb Phipson, another Coastal B-team player, was included in the SA u16B indoor line-up.
Like the rugby season, the hockey season has been extremely unpredictable. Along the way, KZN sides have scored some outstanding victories, including DHS beating Paul Roos 2-1 and the Hibbert Shield runner-up, Parel Vallei. 6-3. Clifton’s record includes a 4-1 win over Kearsney 4-1 and a 2-0 defeat of Westville.
Northwood, the winner of the Michaelhouse Hockey Tournament, is the only team to beat SACS this season, winning 4-2 at the Founders Festival, while Kearsney, after starting the season slowly, is a much-improved outfit. They finished as the runner-up to the Knights at Michaelhouse.
Westville put together a sparkling run at the KES Easter Festival, beating Selborne, Dale, Grey College, St John’s, and Parktown Boys’ High.
Glenwood, with two players in the u18B team and a couple in the u16A side, has put together an encouraging season, which has included draws with Clifton and Maritzburg College.
All of that is a roundabout way to say that KZN Coastal schools have been competitive against tough competition. Their results, along with the unpredictable results from all across South Africa, suggest that the IPT title could be wide open. The team to beat, though, is Western Province, who’ve won the title for the past five years.
Westville’s Harold Siyaya coaches the KZN Coastal u18A team, assisted by Wade Paton, while Angelo Walstroom takes the coaching reins of the KZN Coastal u18B team, with Blair Thompson filling the assistant coach’s role.
Keegan Hezlett, assisted by Brent Phillips, takes charge of the KZN Coastal u16A side.
