Anyone who has watched Durban High School‘s (DHS) hockey teams in action in recent seasons would have noticed certain qualities, including quick ball movement, fast hands, and a no-fear approach to taking on an opponent one-on-one, and those were all to the fore as DHS won the Kearsney Hockey 5s, powered by Belgotex Sport, in Botha’s Hill on Saturday.
It was the first time that School had been a part of the event, but they hit the ground running in a format that is played at the Youth Olympics, winning all five of their matches on the opening day.
The hosts, Kearsney, in their opening game, gave DHS their closest challenge, with the Horseflies bagging a 5-4 win. From there, though, they went from strength to strength.
They downed the defending champion, Hilton College, 5-2, and they beat Michaelhouse, whom they would go on to face in the final, by the same score.
Day two produced tougher tests for DHS and they twice had to hold their nerve to win in shootouts after drawing with Garsfontein and then ‘House, in the final. The title decider ended 3-3 before School edged out the Balgowan boys.
Michaelhouse, who picked up a valuable 2-1 win over Hilton on Friday, secured their place in the final with an impressive 2-1 win over Garsfontein on Saturday afternoon in a contest that had effectively become a semi-final.
Coach Nick Bérichon‘s boys rose to the occasion, showing BMT and patience as they dominated possession to bag the win on the back of a couple of outstanding goals from Thandanani Zuma.

Hilton went on to finish third, holding off Garsfontein, the team they beat in 2024’s final, 4-3.
The hosts, Kearsney College, who had sneaked a 3-2 win over their neighbours and 2023 champions, Westville Boys’ High, earlier in the day, ran roughshod over Westville in the playoff for fifth, charging to a 7-2 win.
Seventh went to St Alban’s College after a comfortable 5-1 win over Ashton International.
GIRLS
St Mary’s DSG, Kloof claimed the girls’ title. They were clearly the class of the field and convincingly beat Maris Stella 4-1 in the final.

Epworth finished third after a tight 3-2 win over Ashton, and Curro Hillcrest downed the defending champion, Danville Park, 2-1 to place fifth.
