St Charles College hosted Maritzburg College in a Pietermaritzburg derby, on Saturday, on Harwin Main Field, and it was Saints who came away with a 1-0 victory in the meeting of the 1st XIs.

They had been somewhat unlucky to finish in a share of ninth at the Primo Big 10 a week ago, while College fell to the eventual runner-up, Northwood, after their penalty shootout went to sudden death.

Saints, though, showed that they’re a quality side and an especially tough nut to crack at home.

While College enjoyed plenty of possession, they struggled to make progress through the midfield. At halftime, it was goalless. Then, in the second half, St Charles upped their intensity and found success attacking down the flanks.

The winning goal came from a free kick, which was delivered to the near post by Covhan Baatjies, where Gubhuza Mlambo met it with a dive at full stretch to give College’s goalkeeper no chance of stopping the ball crossing the goal line.

Mlambo later had an opportunity to make it 2-0 after he beat the offsides trap, but he was denied by the ‘keeper.

St Charles also won the u16A game, but College took victories in the u15A and u14A matches. The Red, Black, and White won 12 games, two were drawn, and Saints won four.

Next weekend, it’s the Raw Cup, with DHS and College doing battle for the trophy. Last year’s contest was a classic. It ended 4-4 before College claimed the silverware in a penalty shootout.

Meanwhile, during the week, College enjoyed success in the Cowie Cup, overrunning Curro Salt Rock 15-0, while Glenwood High got one over high-flying Hillcrest High, winning 1-0.

Hillcrest, the runner-up in the Mancosa KZNHSFA Coastal A-League, beat Glenwood 3-2 in the Plate semi-finals at the Curro Halala Cup earlier this month.
