Clifton College‘s 1st team went six for six at the Ashton Rugby Sevens Tournament on Saturday, in Ballito, to lift the title.

It was a nice boost for the Durban school, who have dominated the event in recent seasons, with Saturday’s success marking the fourth time they had won the Ashton Sevens in succession.

Their games were nicely split, with three hard-fought wins and three comfortable victories.

After a tough season for their 1st XV, Clifton showed at the Independent Schools Rugby Festival that they have some exciting talent returning next year, and it was another opportunity for some of those players to show their skills.

It’s an interesting time on the sporting front. While Clifton is still in Sevens’ action, their 1st XI will be up in Johannesburg to participate in the Fasken Time Cricket Festival, at St David’s Marist Inanda, from 28-31 August.

At the same time, the school is preparing to host the Clifton Water Polo Festival, one of South Africa’s premier tournaments, from 24-28 September. There’s plenty happening on many fronts.

Clifton is one of two KZN sides in action at the Fasken Time Cricket Festival, with the other being St Charles College. They’ll face one another on Saturday, but on the football field, in Pietermaritzburg

Clifton faces a stiff challenge, taking on a talented Noordheuwel side on 28 and 29 August on Gier Oval before facing King Edward VII (KES) on the Temba Bavuma Oval on 30 and 31 August.

Saints meets KES on the Temba Bavuma Oval in their first match. Then, they tackle St John’s College on the Mitchell Oval, at St John’s, in their second game.

The longer form of the game presents a different challenge. One of the things it tends to do is bring spinners into the game more. It will be interesting to see how Shiraz Perumal, Clifton’s star leg-spinner, performs with extra time and more overs to make his mark.
