St Charles College kicked off their challenge at the Eston T20 Tournament with a nail-biting one-run mid-week win over Maritzburg College.
Batting first, Saints posted 113/6, which owed plenty to Connor Simpson, who made 62 off 59 balls, which included two fours and a six. He and Lebo Mokoena shared in a match-winning stand of 91 off 85 balls, with Mokoena contributing 24 runs to the partnership.
Opening bowlers Greg Hoskins and Reece Willson led the Maritzburg College attack, with Hoskins claiming 2/12 in three overs and Willson 2/18 in four.
College replied with 112/6. One of the key factors in the result was Saints conceded only five extras while College conceded 19.
Luan van der Merwe, who has been in fine early-season form, top-scored for College, striking four fours in his 55 off 54 deliveries.
Luka Puddu weighed in with 23 from 24 balls before being run out by St Charles captain Thando Zama.
Ryan Clarke was the pick of the Saints’ bowlers, knocking over 2/14 in four overs. Caleb Sharp bowled tidily, taking 1/18 in four.

St Charles and Glenwood met on the football field in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, with the 1st XIs sharing a 1-1 draw.
The most astonishing results occurred in the U16 age group, where Saints won the U16B team game 7-0, and Glenwood won the U16C match by the same score. Talk about a swing of fortune.
Overall, St Charles won five matches, Glenwood won nine, and four were drawn.

TENNIS
St Charles’s open-age-group tennis teams enjoyed success against Maritzburg College, winning at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team levels, with the 1st team not losing a set.
The fortunes of the U15A and U15B teams were not as successful, with Michaelhouse convincingly beating both.
