Glenwood High made it two wins in succession on Saturday, following up their victory over Clifton College with a hard-fought three-wicket triumph over a Durban High School (DHS) stayers’ side in a low-scoring encounter on Dixon’s Field.
Having elected to bat, DHS struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Glenwood attack. Opener Sulaiman Jadwat dug in for a patient 30 from 94 deliveries, but his run-out proved a significant blow as the visitors slumped to 79/7 in the 33rd over.
The Horseflies mustered only another 15 runs before being dismissed for 94 in 37.2 overs. Shirav Reddy contributed 14, the second-highest individual score of the innings, while 21 extras provided a useful boost to the total.
Glenwood spread the wickets around, with all six bowlers used by the hosts getting among them. Esihle Gasa was particularly economical, returning 2/14 from his 10 overs, while Kreesan Pillai claimed 2/14 in eight overs. Qhamani Sikutshwa also made an impact, taking 2/17 in 3.5 overs.
Despite their modest target, Glenwood found runs hard to come by in reply, and the contest remained alive longer than the hosts would have wanted.
However, Sebastian Oertel again demonstrated his value with the bat. He has been a consistent performer for Glenwood throughout the season, grinding hard for his runs, and his innings on Dixon’s proved match-winning. He struck seven fours in a composed, unbeaten 36 from 70 balls, anchoring the chase and ensuring Glenwood crossed the line in the 29th over.
Contributions from Charles Nkwanyana (11), Gasa (10), and Kamo Moloto (nine) proved important in a tense run chase, while 26 extras helped Glenwood reach their target.
DHS refused to go down without a fight. Eben Peters threatened to turn the match around, with a late burst of wickets reducing Glenwood from 78/4 to 89/7. He finished with an impressive 3/10 from 4.2 overs, but his intervention came too late to prevent the hosts from completing the victory.
Bonga Maphanga also chipped in with 2/30 from eight overs, while Matt Potgieter claimed 1/16 in four.
Ultimately, Glenwood’s superior bowling effort and Oertel’s steady hand proved decisive.
