Rain put a damper on many of the matches between Maritzburg College and Hilton College, including the clash of the 1st XI’s on Goldstone’s.
However, College’s Stayers’ 1st XI took on St Charles in a Schools SA20 clash at the St Charles Oval in midweek, and the day belonged to the visitors who claimed a hard-fought 16-run win.
The toss went the way of St Charles, who opted to field first, but College openers, Kyle de Bruyn and Akhil Bharath put up 33 runs in the power play. De Bruyn was then bowled by Caleb Sharp for a run a ball 20.
His exit brought Luka Puddu to the middle, and he and Bharath proceeded to take charge, adding 105 off only 76 balls, which helped College to 148/3 after their 20 overs.
Bharath struck eight fours and a six in his 61 from 52 balls, while Puddu, who was not out at the end, finished with 55 from 48, including four fours and two sixes.
Connor Vogt, with 2/18 in four, was the pick of the Saints‘ bowlers.
The home side had too many short-lived partnerships when they tried to chase down College’s 148 runs. Matthew Weightmann and Caleb Sharp added 37 from 49 deliveries for the second wicket, and Ryan Clarke and L. Mokwena supercharged the innings with a sixth-wicket stand that produced 63 runs from 44 balls, but seven partnerships delivered seven or less runs.
Clark top-scored with 44 from only 28 balls, while Weightmann made 23 and Mokwena 22.
Greg Hosking picked up 2/24 in four overs, while Dom du Toit kept Saints in check, nabbing 1/16 in his four as the home team finished on 132/8.
