College and DHS deliver a classic at Hilton, College wins hockey

13 May 2026

There was something fitting about the final match of Sharks School Rugby Day on Gilfillan Field delivering the drama it did.

After a day packed with quality schoolboy rugby, the traditional clash between Maritzburg College and Durban High School brought a test-match edge to Hilton College, with intensity crackling through every collision before College snatched a thrilling 18-17 victory at the death.

For College Director of Rugby Hendré Marnitz, it was a particularly meaningful win. Since arriving at College, DHS had proven a stubborn hurdle, with the Red, Black, and White last tasting victory in the fixture in 2021.

“We’ve had a bit of a drought against DHS, so this means a lot,” Marnitz said afterwards. “We’ve been on the wrong side of a couple of tight results, so it was nice to get this one across the line. It was a good day out for us.” DHS, as always, brought enormous physicality and pride to the contest, but they ran into a College side that defended Gilfillan Field with ferocious commitment.

“The boys really showed up today. There was a lot of heart,” Marnitz said. “We had one soft moment where they got a breakaway try. I thought we were fairly well in control, except for the scoreboard. We just couldn’t get the scoreboard rolling.”

College’s defensive effort was immense, with captain Rory Stanton leading from the front. The powerful eighth-man produced another all-action display that further strengthened his growing reputation in a season blessed with outstanding loose forwards.

“We want to hunt like a pack of wolves,” Marnitz explained. “The boys care about their badge, and they care about their brotherhood. Those are the fundamentals we try to instil week in and week out. I’m very pleased for them.”

Despite College’s territorial pressure, DHS struck first with a superb counterattacking try. Scrumhalf Richaard Kriel showed electric pace to break clear before feeding Amo Mataboge, who powered through contact to score. Tanwil Onkers added the conversion for a 7-3 halftime lead.

Stanton then took charge after the break, twice crossing wide on the left wing. Dom du Toit converted the first, while an earlier Onkers penalty had briefly levelled matters before Stanton’s second try nudged College ahead again at 15-10.

Still, DHS refused to yield. With only two minutes remaining, the Horseflies mauled their way deep into College territory from a five-metre lineout, and Okhule Mbanjwa crashed over to the left of the uprights. The straightforward conversion edged DHS into a 17-15 lead.

College, though, remained composed.

“We had a plan to kick a good restart and try to get the ball back,” Marnitz said. “Then, we had a plan about what we wanted to do from the scrum.

“The boys stuck to that plan, we stayed in the fight, and we got the opportunity. If there is one guy I would back to make the kick, it’s Dom du Toit. He’s a super kicker. I’m really happy for him. He’s special.”

From 32 metres out, 15 metres in from the right-hand touchline, Du Toit delivered.

The strike was clean and true. Even before the ball sailed between the uprights, the College flyhalf was pumping his fists in celebration. Seconds later, the final whistle sounded on a bruising, high-quality encounter.

Du Toit’s match-winning kick provided the headline moment, but his calm game management and crisp service behind a tireless College pack had already marked him out as one of the standout performers on the day.

“If you look at the last bit – the guts of the boys, the composure, and how they fight – it’s a special group of boys who have worked very hard for the last six to eight months,” Marnitz reflected. “I’m just happy for them.”

While DHS lost for a fourth time – they’ve also fallen to Northwood, Monument, and Paarl Gimnasium – they remain a very dangerous outfit, and any suggestions about their demise are ill-considered. It takes two to tango, and DHS brought plenty to an absorbing encounter. It took everything College had to edge past the Horseflies.

In other College vs DHS matches played at the Sharks Schools Rugby Day, DHS beat College 35-12 at u16A level. They also won the u15A match 28-18, and the u14A clash 33-8.

Overall, College won 10 matches, DHS won 10, and one was drawn. In the game of the day, the DHS 2nd XV edged out College 42-40.
