Hilton College captain Ethan van Heerden lost the toss, but Michaelhouse skipper Sebastian Hofmeyr‘s decision to bat first gave Van Heerden what he would have wanted as Hilton bowled first on the Hart-Davis Oval on Saturday.
Opening bowler Netanzi Denenga generated good pace and bounce and struck an early blow for the home side, removing the in-form Graydon Leslie in the first over, with Jayden Roux pouching an edge to send the opener back to the pavilion.
Van Heerden then had Hofmeyr caught behind by wicketkeeper Ben Hockly for six, followed by a brilliant diving catch to his right by Hockly to his right to account for Ethan Muir and give Denenga his second wicket.
Ben Heuer and Cival Rugbar stopped the bleeding, joining forces to add 43 for the fourth wicket before Heuer’s fighting knock of 25 from 26 balls, which included four fours, was ended when Jayden Roux bagged a second catch, this time off Stewart Falconer.
Rugbar produced a gutsy innings, stubbornly looking after his wicket, but Luke Campbell inflicted further damage on the ‘House batting, getting rid of Radhesh Jhilmeet and Hayden Hewlett. The spinner then removed Rugbar, caught by Alex Pitman, for 43 from 94 balls.
Jean-Luc Rey, defiantly, smashed two sixes in his 13, but he was the only other batsman to make it into double figures.
Denenga returned to prevent the tail from wagging, and Michaelhouse was all out for 146. The paceman led the Hilton attack superbly, knocking over 4/22 in 9.2 overs, while Luke Campbell performed outstandingly, too, snaring 3/25 in 10.
Stewart Falconer’s tidy 1/11 in five put the ‘House batsmen under pressure, as did Benoit Rey‘s neat 10-over spell, which brought him 1/29.
With not many runs to defend, Michaelhouse needed wickets and they needed to take them early, but that never happened. Ben Hockly and Alex Pitman confidently set Hilton on course for victory with a 108-run opening stand.
Pitman was the more fluent of the two, scoring 66 from 71 deliveries, with nine fours, before he was caught by Thandanani Zuma off the bowling of Ben Heuer.

Robert Burman, who was outstanding in Hilton’s winning of the Tuskers’ Schools SA20 title, missed out this time, caught by Hofmeyr off of Jhilmeet for only two. With his departure, Hilton was 123/2.
They came close to overhauling the Michaelhouse total without the loss of another wicket, but with only eight runs required, Hockly became Jhilmeet’s second victim, with Heuer catching the opener for 62 from 93 balls. His innings had included two sixes and five fours.
Soon after, Charles Swart and Jayden Roux saw the home team to a comfortable seven-wicket victory after 33.2 overs.
Jhilmeet did a fine job with the ball, snapping up 2/19 from eight overs, while Heuer claimed 1/7 from two.
