Try line stand wins it for Michaelhouse, ‘House wins on Punchbowl

22 June 2026

For more than a century, the rivalry between Hilton College and Michaelhouse has been defined by the narrowest of margins, and Saturday’s clash on Meadows in Balgowan added another unforgettable chapter to that story.

When the final whistle sounded, Michaelhouse had edged out Hilton 20-16, but the difference between victory and defeat was measured not in points, but in centimetres. Hilton thought they had found a match-winning try deep into injury time, only for Michaelhouse to hold them up over the line and secure a dramatic victory.

The relief and joy among the home supporters were immediate. They streamed onto the field to celebrate a famous win, while Hilton’s players stood stunned. Having poured everything into the contest, they were left to reflect on how close they had come.

The result gave Michaelhouse its 102nd victory in South African school rugby’s tightest rivalries. Hilton had registered its 100th win earlier this season, while 10 matches have been drawn, underlining just how evenly matched the two schools have been throughout their history. On average, one point has separated the sides for every five matches played.

There was little to separate them again.

Hilton carried a 13-10 lead into halftime and looked well-positioned after a disciplined opening 35 minutes. Yet Michaelhouse emerged from the break with renewed energy and seized control through a decisive 10-point burst that ultimately proved the difference.

Even then, Hilton refused to yield.

A penalty from flyhalf John Grubb with five minutes remaining reduced the deficit to four points and set up a frantic finish in which the visitors dominated territory and possession, repeatedly hammering away at the Michaelhouse line.

For Michaelhouse Director of Rugby James Fleming, the closing stages stirred memories of recent heartbreaks in the fixture. In 2023, Michaelhouse turned down an easy penalty goal late in the game in pursuit of victory, only to be denied. A year later, Hilton snatched a dramatic 26-25 victory through a late try by right wing Seb Gaboreau.

This time, however, fortune smiled on the hosts.

The opening score arrived after Hilton, on defence, stole a Michaelhouse throw-in inside the Hilton 22. However, when Hilton attempted to clear their lines, the kick was charged down, and Oliver Vickery reacted quickest, diving onto the loose ball to score.

Grubb replied with a penalty after 10 minutes to put Hilton on the board. He later came within centimetres of giving his side the lead, but a long-range effort struck the left upright and bounced across the face of the posts.

Hilton continued to apply pressure, spending extended periods in Michaelhouse territory. Their persistence paid off in the 29th minute when Ruan Mulder produced a moment of individual brilliance. Spotting the slightest gap in the defence, he burst through a tackle, accelerated clear, and finished with an athletic dive over the line.

Grubb added the conversion to put Hilton 10-5 ahead.

Soon afterwards, the visitors gained another opportunity when Grubb launched an outstanding clearance kick from deep inside his own 22. The kick found touch inside the Michaelhouse 22, allowing Hilton to launch another attack. A penalty followed, and Grubb stretched the lead to eight points.

Michaelhouse, though, responded before halftime.

Loosehead prop Aphelele Chamane sparked the move by intercepting a Hilton pass and charging deep into opposition territory. The hosts recycled possession through multiple phases before outside centre Fabiano Fierro crossed wide on the left. Alex Jankowitz was unable to add the conversion, leaving Hilton with a narrow 13-10 advantage at the break.

The second half began perfectly for Michaelhouse.

Less than three minutes after the restart, the hosts kicked a penalty into touch five metres from the Hilton line. From the ensuing lineout, captain Nicolas Salamousas powered over for a crucial try. Jankowitz converted to hand Michaelhouse a 17-13 lead and ignite the home crowd.

Nine minutes into the half, Jankowitz extended the advantage to seven points with a well-struck penalty from 30 metres out.

Grubb answered with a penalty of his own shortly afterwards, making it 20-16 and setting up a gripping final quarter.

Defences dominated from there. Both teams attacked with intent, but neither side was prepared to give an inch. Much of the battle unfolded around midfield before Hilton gradually tightened its grip on territory during the closing stages.

Ross Steyn led the charge from eighthman, repeatedly carrying into heavy traffic and driving Hilton forward. With seven minutes remaining, the visitors laid siege to the Michaelhouse line, but the home defence refused to break.

A brilliant run by Mulder almost changed everything. The powerful Hilton back surged through a gap and raced towards the try line before being hauled down agonisingly short.

Then came the decisive sequence.

With two minutes remaining, Hilton earned a penalty directly in front of the posts, only 12 metres out. Trailing by four points, a kick at posts was not an option. Instead, they backed their forwards and launched a series of powerful pick-and-drive assaults.

Penalty advantage followed penalty advantage as Hilton inched closer. Finally, Guy Fender burst onto a pass at speed and appeared to have scored the winning try.

But Michaelhouse scrumhalf Ben Hughes and centre Alex Jankowitz somehow got underneath him and held him up over the line.

The referee immediately blew the whistle for the last time.

The home supporters exploded with joy and flooded the field to embrace their heroes.

The overall results favoured Michaelhouse, who ruled the open age group, sweeping those matches. The u16A game ended in a 24-24 draw, but ‘House won the remainder of the u16 games and the u15 matches, although by only two points in the A teams’ showdown.

Michaelhouse also won the u14A match, but Hilton picked up two wins to one at u14 level.

Rourque van Rooyen gave ‘House the lead with a well-taken field goal, but Ben Wilson struck back for Hilton shortly afterwards from a penalty corner.

Michaelhouse had struggled to advance the ball through Hilton’s midfield in the first half, but they enjoyed more success in doing that in the second stanza, and with that came two more goals.

Henry Yeadon provided the finish to a ‘House attack before Ben Heuer sealed the deal with a penalty stroke.

Michaelhouse won seven matches, Hilton won three, and four were drawn. The match of the day went to the u16D sides, with Hilton scraping a 4-3 victory in an entertaining clash.
