One-Stripe runs riot against St Alban’s, hockey spoils shared

23 June 2026

Competition between Kearsney College and St Alban’s in Botha’s Hill on Saturday was very evenly contested on the Astro, but it was one-way traffic for the hosts on the rugby fields, which included a big 94-10 victory for the Kearsney 1st XV on Stott Field.

They dictated play from the first whistle, with the One-Stripe‘s slick and inventive attack stretching the Hoops‘ defences, creating holes inside and space outside, as Kearsney raced into a 35-0 lead after only 19 minutes.

Captain Nhlanhla Ndlovu set the tone, crossing for a close-range try before hitting the afterburners to run in Kearsney’s second try from long range.

Dan Miskey (see feature photo) made it over the try line but kindly tossed the ball into Luke Fauré‘s hands to allow the hooker to score. Keanu Williamson ran a good line to break through the St Alban’s defence for another five, and Luke Grobbelaar finished a try that was set up by a clever cross-field kick from Tom Aylward.

It didn’t help the visitors that flyhalf Dan Miskey converted each of the first five tries Kearsney scored, but they finally mustered a reply in the 24th minute through scumhalf Henk Luüs, who sniped over after a good driving maul sucked in the home side’s defenders.

Kearsney responded before the half was over, though, with Grobbelaar over for a second time after being fed the ball in acres of space. Miskey, at last, missed off the tee, but Kearsney led 40-5 at the break.

It didn’t get any better for St Alban’s in the second half, with Kearsney tacking on another 54 points to the Pretoria school’s five.

Nhlanhla Ndlovu bolstered his fantastic try-scoring record with another two, taking his tally in the game to four, while Tom Aylward crossed for a brace, with Tunga Griffiths, Daniel Hunwick, and Fynn Verbaan also breaching the whitewash in a one-sided clash.

Credit to St Alban’s, they conjured up a second try, again scored by Luüs, who sold a dummy before evading a tackle to grab his second five-pointer, but there was a chasm between the sides, which was the narrative for the day.
