St David’s1st teams top St Charles, Saints’ depth shines

9 June 2026

St Charles College took the long road to Johannesburg on the weekend to face St David’s Marist Inanda on the Johannesburg school’s Old Boys’ Day. Debating, cross country, football, golf, chess, hockey, tennis, and rugby made up a busy schedule.

RUGBY

Given that they had beaten St Stithians the previous weekend, albeit by scoring a last-gasp try, converted by Caleb Sharp to secure a 33-31 victory, and given that St Stithians had beaten St David’s 20-12 in their opening match of the season, the Wild Dogs would have felt confident heading into Saturday’s clash.

Sometimes, though, long-distance trips and playing at high altitude come with a penalty, and so it proved for St Charles, who led 5-3 at halftime, but fell to a 19-29 defeat.

That would have been a disappointment to Saints, but their overall results in the rugby games were good. They won 10, St David’s won four, and the u16B match was drawn.

The Pietermaritzburg school’s wins included victories for their u16A, u15A, and u14A sides.
