Glenwood High had their way with Clifton College, whose line-up showed four changes in the pack and one at the back after a hard-fought 17-23 defeat to St David’s Marist Inanda last weekend. Unfortunately for Clifton, injuries have severely impacted their season, and they had to deal with more of the same against the Green Machine.
The home side’s pack laid a solid platform for Glenwood’s backline, who made good use of the good quality ball provided to them by scoring all 10 tries in a 58-14 victory on Saturday on Dixon’s Field. They led 27-7 at halftime.
Scrumhalf Vincenzo Loutz enjoyed his outing, crossing for a hat-trick of tries, and he also added two conversions for a personal tally of 19 points.
The Green Machine’s Czech left-wing, Jakub Bednar, got the scoreboard moving with the first try of the contest, and he, too, also went on to notch a hat-trick.
Fullback Rosco Williams weighed in with a couple of five-pointers of his own, while Elgenio Oerson added a try and two conversions, and right-wing Zube Molulo crossed for a try.
Clifton flank Cole Nienhuser scored a first-half try for the visitors, and loosehead prop Jonathan Masumbuko shed a couple of tacklers with a memorable spin move before racing over to score and make the score 34-14 in the second half. Captain Troy Young converted both tries.
The u16A match was tightly contested, but Glenwood won comfortably in the u15A and u14A showdowns.

On Friday evening, at the 3 Schools Astro, Clifton withstood early pressure from Glenwood and implemented a tactically astute game plan to defuse the home side’s efforts in an impressive 4-0 win.
Glenwood had put together a strong campaign, improving as the season progressed and achieving some notable results, including a 2-2 draw with Maritzburg College and a 1-0 win over Westville Boys’ High in their last outing. They had also drawn 3-3 with Clifton in April when the sides met at the Riverside Sports Club.
This time, however, Clifton had the answers, and their defence gave nothing away.
Sharpshooting Dan Holliday provided the breakthrough in the second chukka, after a messy penalty corner from the visitors resulted in a scramble inside the circle.
Their second, scored by Ryde Brisset in the third chukka, also came after the PC routine faltered. The Clifton skipper didn’t, however, and he slotted with a neat reverse stick shot across the goalkeeper and into the far corner.
Sean Johnson and Dan Holliday put the result beyond doubt with two goals in the fourth chukka. Johnson’s came after he reacted quickly to a ball that bounced up off a defender’s stick, deflecting it into the goal, and Holliday profited from a Dan Rea shot, which found his strike partner at the far post.
“It’s a nice way to end our season,” said Clifton’s coach Calvin Price.
Besides the 1st XI result, the most notable scoreline was that in the u14A match, which Clifton won 3-1 with two superb goals in the fourth chukka. Glenwood’s u14A team has enjoyed an outstanding season. At last, though, another KZN team had their number.
Overall, Glenwood won three matches, including the u16A clash 2-1. Clifton won seven, with three of those being by 1-0 margins.
