Rolling maul powers College to win over St Charles

5 May 2026

Maritzburg College returned to Goldstone’s on Saturday for a clash with their Pietermaritzburg rivals, St Charles College. with purpose. When the dust had settled on an entertaining contest, College had delivered an emphatic 45-5 victory, but on their control, physicality, and clinical finishing.

While the result favoured the Red, Black, and White by 40 points, Saints, in their lone scoring move, provided the game’s brightest highlight.

From a scrum midway in their 22, St Charles’ scrumhalf Agape Nyawo fed the ball to his right. It was sent down the backline to outside centre Njabulo Nala, who cleverly picked out Raheem Wheatley on the right touchline with a kick-pass.

When a defender met Wheatley, he chipped ahead. The bounce of the ball beat the right wing, but it sat up invitingly for PJ Dlamini. The fullback gratefully accepted the invitation and sprinted over in the right-hand corner to finish off an enterprising attack spanning 90 metres.

Even after St Charles reduced the deficit to 5-14, College remained composed. Their response was immediate and emphatic, with Boshoff again the beneficiary of a powerful rolling maul on the half-hour mark. Then, just before the break, it was more of the same. The pack went to work, the maul marched forward, and Boshoff completed his hat-trick to send College into halftime with a commanding 28-5 lead.

If there were hopes of a Saints comeback, they were quickly extinguished after the restart.

Boshoff added his fourth in the 44th minute, once again from close range, as College’s forwards continued to dictate terms. Caleb Scheepers then finished off a sharp counterattack to stretch the lead further, underlining the hosts’ ability to strike from both structure and broken play.

St Charles kept probing, to their credit, but they found little reward against a disciplined and well-organised defence.

Scheepers had the final say five minutes from time, taking advantage of a quick tap and an overlap to cruise over in the corner, rounding off a seven-try display.

It was, in the end, a performance that reflected Maritzburg College’s identity: direct, physical, and efficient. It was also another tidy kicking performance from scrumhalf, Dom du Toit, who slotted five of seven conversion attempts, to help extend the gap between the sides.

The best match of the day was, arguably, the clash of the u16A sides. The teams tallied 53 points in total, but only five separated them at the end, with College claiming a hard-fought 29-24 victory.

The u15A match was a tight contest, too, with College triumphing 17-7.

HOCKEY

Ahead of their meeting on Saturday, St Charles had finished the Michaelhouse Hockey Tournament on a high, scoring successive victories over St Andrew’s College and Paarl Boys’ High. College, meanwhile, never quite hit their stride. They finished sixth overall, just one place ahead of Saints, after going down 1-2 to Michaelhouse in their playoff match.

St Charles had good reason to feel optimistic about their chances on Saturday, but facing Maritzburg College in a winter derby – whether on Goldstone’s or Pape’s Astro – is a tough challenge. Home ground advantage means something at the home of the Red, Black, and White.

Saints gave College a good go, but the home side soaked up some early pressure before turning the tide. Matthew Smith gave College the lead from a penalty stroke to put the home team 1-0 ahead at halftime.

In the second stanza, Smith added a stunning field goal before he was again called on to convert a penalty stroke. No problem! A hat-trick for Matthew Smith and a 3-0 victory for Maritzburg College.

Most of the results went College’s way, but Saints showed their depth, competing well among the lower teams, with their u16F side scoring a notable victory.
