The benefit of an interschools’ indoor hockey league was on show at the SASHOC Indoor Hockey Inter-Provincial Tournament, hosted by KZN Coastal, from 1-4 December, with Coastals dominating the event.
In the boys’ competition, KZN Coastal made a clean sweep, winning the u14, u16, and u18 sections. The KZN Coastal girls won the u14 title, finished third at u16 level, and second in the u18 age group.
Not surprisingly, when the SA u16 A and u16B teams, and the SA u18A and u18B sides were announced, KZN Coastal, especially, was liberally represented.
Captained by Bhavesh Naicker, of DHS, and coached by Northwood‘s Shaun Baker, the KZN Coastal u18 team was the class of the field, although they were pushed all the way in their opener, edging out the KZN Invitational team 3-2.
The Invitational side showed the strength in depth in the province; they were a late inclusion, after the withdrawal of a team, and were composed of boys from the u16 and u18 age groups. KZN Coastal included A and B teams in both age groups, so the Invitational side’s competitiveness spoke volumes about the quality of the game in the Coastal region.
It was KZN Coastal’s depth that was one of the standout features of the tournament. They were able to substitute like-for-like in almost all of their teams. Few, if any, others were able to match that.
The u18 side produced a perfect record of seven wins from seven games, which included a 4-2 win over Northerns A in the final.
KZN Coastal B finished second in the standings after the pool stage, going down only to Coastals A while drawing with the Invitational side and Northerns A and beating Southern Gauteng and Southern Free State.
They fell to Northerns A in the semi-finals, losing 3-5, and went down 1-4 to Southerns in the bronze medal match.
Northerns’ Douw Nel, from Hoërskool Zwartkop, topped the goal scoring charts, with 15. He was followed by Ashton Ballito‘s Jaiden Krambeck, who netted nine times for KZN Coastal A. Third on the list was KZN Coastal B’s Daniel Joss, Clifton College‘s 2026 Head Boy, who scored seven goals.

In the u16 competition, KZN Coastal A won five and drew one. They won all of their matches convincingly, barring against Northerns A. They drew 2-2 in their pool game and then beat the same side 2-1 in the final.
KZN Inland A finished fourth, winning four games and losing two. They fell 4-5 to Southerns in the third-place playoff. If it was action you wanted, Inland was the team to provide it. Those nine goals were the fewest scored in any of their matches.
Their challenge was spearheaded Hilton College‘s Santiago Matroos, who netted a sensational 21 times, with 13 penalty corner conversions, seven field goals, and one penalty stroke.
Kearsney‘s Dylan Forbes paced the Coastal attack, netting 13 times, while Northwood’s Hamza Amla, playing for KZN Coastal B, was the third highest goal scorer, with nine to his name. Coastal finished just behind Inland, in fifth place.
In the u14 event, KZN Coastal won five and drew one match, sharing a 2-2 draw with Northerns A. It was very tight between the two sides, with Coastal taking the title on goal difference over Northerns, who produced a similar record.
KZN Coastal B placed third, winning three and losing three, while KZN Inland A was fourth, with two wins, a draw, and three losses.
Westville Boys’ High‘s Taine Lawson and Lord Makgato, from Glenwood, led all goal scorers, tied with seven apiece.
The 12-player SA u18A side included six players from KZN Coastal A: Christopher Abrahams, Tyrique Cloete, and Bhavesh Naicker, from DHS; Georg Wolhuter and Ryde Brisset, from Clifton College; and Mesuli Msomi, from Glenwood.
The SA u18B team featured another five KZN Coastal A players, and one more from the KZN Coastal B side: Jack Edwards and Tyhil Naidoo (Westville Boys’ High), Jaiden Krambeck (Ashton Ballito), Tyle Milne (Clifton College), Joel Steyn (Kearsney College), and Cyrus Hendricks (KZN Coastal B and Reddam House Umhlanga).
Four KZN Coastal A players featured in the SA u16A line-up: Luc Boyall, from Northwood; Dylan Forbes, from Kearney; goalkeeper Dean Hart, from Northwood, who has only one arm!; and Luke Lambert, from Westville Boys’ High.
The SA u16B squad included KZN Coastal A’s Sisekelo Mbutho, Caleb Phipson, and Ryan Willis, from Northwood, and Hlompho Morake, from DHS.
KZN Inland’s representation included Santiago Matroos in the u16A side and his Hilton College teammate, Jess Sauls, in the u16B squad, along with Joshua Smith, from Maritzburg College.
