Five players from Durban High School (DHS) have been selected for the KZN Coastal u19 team that will contest the prestigious Khaya Majola Week in Bloemfontein in December.
Westville Boys’ High has three representatives, while Clifton College contributes two. Northwood, Glenwood, Kearsney, and the Inanda, Ntuzuma, and KwaMashu (INK) Hub each have one player in the squad.
For DHS, it’s been a year defined by top-order consistency, and fittingly their formidable trio of Ismaeel Omar, Ethan Cooper, and Josh van Biljon all crack the nod.
Cooper adds depth as a useful bowling option, while left-hander Omar and wicketkeeper-batsman Van Biljon have been prolific, with both surpassing the 1 000-run mark in 2025.
Bayanda Majola will lead the Coastal attack with his genuine pace, which could prove decisive on the Highveld wickets, and he offers a useful left-handed bat, too. Bonga Maphanga completes the DHS contingent, offering further strength in the bowling department.
Westville’s trio includes Seth Simpson, seen by many, alongside Van Biljon, as one of the province’s most dominant batsmen; Tristin Delvin, a left-handed all-rounder who has featured strongly with both bat and ball throughout the season, offers a spin option; and Dayalan Boyce, a lively paceman capable of producing unplayable deliveries thanks to his unusually sharp movement through the air.
Clifton College captain Tim Saulez adds seam-bowling depth and is a reliable run-scorer in his own right, capable of making match-winning contributions in both departments. His teammate Shiraz Perumal provides an attacking leg-spin option. In 2024, he sent a Clifton 1st XI record for the most wickets in a season. Now in grade 11, he has demolished his previous mark with a sensational year.
Bandile Mbatha represents Glenwood. A proven bowling all-rounder, he was among South Africa’s standout performers in the u19 series against England earlier this year, contributing impressively with both bat and ball.
With Mbatha, Majola, and Boyce, who have all represented South Africa at u19 level, the Coastal seam attack looks particularly potent. Add Kearsney College left-arm paceman Litha Gonya to the mix and the Coastal attack presents more variety and another challenge. Mbatha and Majola are the only players who turned out at the Khaya Majola Week in 2024.
Northwood skipper Kyle White (feature photo) adds solidity in the middle order and can chip in with his useful part-time bowling.
Rounding out the squad is Sbani Qwaba from the INK Hub, a noteworthy inclusion as the only player from outside the traditional boys’ schools that usually dominate provincial selections.
Qwaba is far from a newcomer, though. He represented KZN Coastal in the inter-provincial week a couple of seasons ago with some players who will be his teammates in Bloemfontein, including Omar, Van Biljon, Boyce, White, and Saulez. Simpson was a non-travelling reserve.
