The Glenwood Rugby Festival brings together a diverse field of teams annually – covering the u14, u15, and u16 age groups, and 2nd XVs and 1st XVs – making for six days of interesting rugby between teams that would seldom meet if not for the festival.
The 2025 edition concluded on Saturday after six days of action, and when the dust had settled it reflected kindly on the hosts, Glenwood, and Durban High School (DHS). Both schools showed off their strength in all the age groups.
DHS didn’t surrender a point in any of their u14, u15, and u16 outings, while the DHS Invitation side scored a 36-17 win over Landboudal and played to a 10-10 draw with Transvalia. Meanwhile, the DHS 1st XV cruised to 41-20 win over Kingswood College and a 35-5 defeat of Selborne College at the Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival.
Last year, in a challenging season, the Glenwood 1st XV scraped an 11-9 win over Transvalia at the Glenwood Rugby Festival. This time around, they had an even lower-scoring win over HTS Middelburg, triumphing 7-5.
Given that the Rooi Bulle have already beaten Dr EG Jansen, Hoërskool Nelspruit, and Hoërskool Fochville, and fell to a narrow 22-26 loss to Hoërskool Waterkloof, that appears to be a far more impressive result for Glenwood. The early signs are that the Glenwood 1st XV is on course for a much-improved season in 2025.
Their depth was shown when a Glenwood Invitation side suffered two extremely tight losses, going down 13-15 to Jim Fouché and 5-6 to Transvalia.
HTS Middelburg, after going down to Glenwood, subsequently beat DF Malan 27-9 and Landboudal 31-10.
Potchefstroom Volkskool, meanwhile, went three for three, beating a KZN Select team 55-0, Landboudal 18-7, and Vryheid Landbou 40-3.
The pick of the 2nd XVs was Westvalia. They beat Hilton College 31-14 in their first outing and then overwhelmed Jim Fouché 50-3 before ending with a 50-0 cruise against DF Malan.
Glenwood surrendered seven points to Jim Fouché in an u14 match, but that was in a one-sided 50-7 victory. They won their other game, against CBC Bulawayo 50-0.
The Green Machine was especially dominant in the u15 age group, topping 50 points in all three of their wins, tallying 156 points in total without giving up one. They added two more wins at u16 level, thumping DF Malan 50-0, but were made to work harder for a 33-12 win over Jim Fouché.
HTS Middelburg picked up two u15 wins, beating a Westville Invitation XV 33-22 before sneaking a 19-17 win over Northwood. DHS, though, was a bridge too far and School powered their way to a 41-0 win.
