Kearsney’s mathematics excellence on show in Olympiad

Kearsney College‘s focus on Mathematics excellence has reaped rich rewards, with with 17 Kearsney boys making it onto the provincial honours’ list of the top 100 students in round two of the national Mathematics Olympiad.

Given the importance of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) for study and career options, Kearsney has placed special emphasis on excellence in mathematics and science. The results have been outstanding. In the 2023 IEB exams, Kearsney learners averaged 73 percent in mathematics, well above the national average.

In the senior category (grades 10-12) of the Mathematics Olympiad, Jack White placed fourth, with Woojae Lee and Hayden Dunsdon securing top 15 spots. Ryan Browning, Matt Olivier, James Sim, Matthew Behrens and Daniel Bothma were also on the senior provincial list.

Kearsney students on the junior provincial list (grades 8 and 9) included Mukona Marageni, Thomas Schulze, Thomas du Plessis, Shavanth Chelladu, Shay Bagaria, Craig McKenzie, Luke Treleaven, Dru Mills and Keegan Simpson.

Marangeni, who received 96 percent for the paper, was the top student in KZN.

Jack White (grade 12), Mukona Marageni (grade 9) and Thomas Schulze (grade 8) were selected to write the third round of the prestigious Olympiad, which places them in the top 100 in South Africa in their respective categories.

In addition to Kearsney’s Olympiad successes, Liam Botha, Lefa Kgomo, George Sykes and Thomas Waldburger have received special invitations as Developing Talents to the Inter-Provincial Mathematics Team Competition, based on recognition by the SA Mathematics Foundation. The event takes place in mid-September.
