Westville Boys’ High made the most of their first visit to the Hoërskool Pionier Sevens, not only winning the second round of the Clover High School Sevens Series event’s U15 and U17 titles, but also supplying all four finalists, with their development teams, the Griffins, also winning through to the title games on Saturday.
The U17 competition provided the more competitive of the two finals, although Westville’s route to the decider had been anything but difficult. The defending national champions cruised through their matches, with the closest they came to being challenged before the final a 29-point margin of victory in their 36-7 Cup quarterfinal win over HS Vryheid.
They then faced the Griffins in the final and were made to work considerably harder, eventually winning 26-15.
The Griffins had come through the most competitive pool in the tournament, Pool B, where they opened with a 12-12 draw against Amajuba. They followed that with a comfortable 36-5 victory over Sarel Cilliers before being pushed hard by HS Vryheid, eventually prevailing 17-12.
The intensity increased in the Cup quarterfinals, where the Griffins edged past Ferrum 21-17, before another tight encounter in the semifinals saw them squeeze past Sarel Cilliers 17-14.
Westville, meanwhile, was in no mood for complications in their semifinal, sweeping aside the Pionier Sevens’ defending champions, Hentie Cilliers, 36-5 to set up an all-Westville final.
Ferrum claimed the Plate after beating Pionier by 17 points, while Newcastle defeated Pongola Akademie in the Bowl final. Dundee took the Shield with a victory over Sarel Cilliers 2.
If the U17 competition offered some resistance to Westville, the U15 tournament was a different story.
Westville’s U15s were virtually untouchable, piling up 232 points in just five matches at an average of more than 46 points per game.
Their defence was equally impressive. They conceded only one try throughout the competition in a one-sided 50-7 semifinal victory over Vryheid Landbou.
The Griffins also progressed comfortably to the semifinals, where they finally encountered some resistance. HS Vryheid pushed them hard, but the Griffins prevailed 26-19 to book their place in the final.
There was little drama in the decider, however, as Westville ran out 34-0 winners.
Remarkably, that was their narrowest victory of the tournament.

For Westville, the Pionier round was an emphatic reminder of why they remain one of the benchmarks in South African schoolboys’ Sevens, with both their senior and development teams dominating the weekend from start to finish.
They’ll face far tougher competition at the Durban High School (DHS) Sevens, the next round of the Clover High School Sevens Series, on 28 and 29 August.
