De Bruyn leads Knights to victory, Williams off to Youth Olympics

2 November 2026

Northwood produced a magnificent batting performance on Dixon’s Field on Saturday, recovering from a first-ball setback to pile up 303/8 against Glenwood High on a field that typically is tough to score on. That set them up for an emphatic 126-run victory in their 50-over clash.

It was a commanding display from the Knights, who had two centurions’ worth of quality in their top order. David de Bruyn led the charge with a superb 120, and Ross McGlashan provided excellent support. Their superb 179-run second-wicket partnership laid the foundation for a total that proved well beyond Glenwood’s reach.

Northwood had the worst possible start, losing a wicket from the first ball of their innings. However, McGlashan and De Bruyn refused to allow that early setback to derail them. They batted with patience and purpose, scoring at just shy of a run a ball, before Qhamani Sikutshwa finally broke through, bowling McGlashan for 61. His 93-ball innings included 10 fours.

De Bruyn, meanwhile, had been steadily building towards a major score. He continued to dominate the Glenwood attack, finding the boundary with regularity and punishing anything loose. By the time Esihle Gasa trapped him LBW, Northwood’s number three had compiled a magnificent 120 from 112 balls, including 16 fours and four sixes.

It was a substantial blow for Glenwood, but the Knights were not finished. De Bruyn and Ryan Willis had already added 55 for the third wicket before Gasa struck, and although Glenwood picked up another wicket to leave the visitors on 241/4 in the 42nd over, Northwood found another gear.

Willis and Jamie Wimble put together a useful 53 from just 40 deliveries for the fifth wicket, with Wimble contributing 28 before departing.

Willis then carried his bat through to the end, finishing unbeaten on 56 as Northwood closed their 50 overs on an imposing 303/8. It was a particularly impressive effort on a ground where runs had been hard to come by the previous weekend, when Glenwood edged out DHS in a low-scoring contest in which 191 runs were scored while 17 wickets fell.

Sikutshwa was Glenwood’s most successful bowler, claiming 3/42 from eight overs. Kamo Moloto took 2/33 from five, while Gasa finished with 2/51 from 10.

Glenwood’s response began disastrously. The Green Machine lost three wickets in the first four overs and were reeling on 4/3, with Josh Mills responsible for two of the early dismissals.

Sebastian Oertel and Mishael Gunawardana attempted to restore some order, adding 44 for the fourth wicket, but their partnership consumed 85 deliveries before Gunawardana departed for 16. Oertel followed soon afterwards, caught by Wimble off Hamza Amla for 25.

When Glenwood slipped to 78/7, with Jonah Chaita falling for 24, the result looked beyond doubt.

However, the home side showed plenty of character in the lower order. Charles Nkwanyana and Neel Patel led a spirited fightback, combining for 55 for the eighth wicket before Ryan van Zyl bowled Nkwanyana for a lively 44 from 41 balls, which had featured four sixes and three fours.

Patel continued to resist alongside Gasa, and the pair added an unbeaten partnership to see Glenwood through their remaining overs. Patel finished on 28 not out and Gasa on 19 not out, lifting the home side to 177/8.

Northwood used 10 bowlers in their efforts to wrap up the innings, with Amla leading the way, taking 3/25 from 10 overs. Van Zyl was particularly economical, claiming 2/11 from seven, while Mills returned 2/7 from five.

Ultimately, though, the contest belonged to Northwood’s batsmen. Their recovery from the first-ball dismissal, the quality of the McGlashan-De Bruyn partnership, and the contributions that followed combined to produce a big total, which led to a comprehensive victory.

In other matches, Xavier Grewar (137*) and Declan Miles (128) scored centuries for Northwood’s U15B team, but bowlers dominated the day.

Jude Ivey snapped up 4/6 for Northwood’s 3rd XI, Liem Chetty took 4/8, and Joe Headilar 4/10, in the 4th XI game, while Albert Marx bagged 4/39 for the 5th XI. In the other notable innings of the day, Hanni Marx smashed 70 not out of only 26 balls in that match, blasting 10 sixes.

Iwan Olivier picked up 4/6 in the 6th XI contest, while Connor Thompson claimed 4/9 and Benji Wimble 4/27 in the U15A game, and Sbonga Ngubo responded with 4/38 for Glenwood.

Luke Dreyer took 4/35 in Northwood’s U14A win, but the best figures belonged to Oliver Candy, who knocked over 5/29 in the U15B match.

RUGBY

Glenwood’s proud rugby tradition was further enhanced when Rosco Williams (see featured photo) was named in the SA Rugby U17 Sevens squad to compete in the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.

Given South Africa’s status as one of the world’s leading rugby-playing nations, the goal, and it’s a realistic one, will be gold.

BASKETBALL

Northwood scored a clean sweep in the eight basketball matches, but that wasn’t the story. Rather, it was Glenwood’s competitiveness, especially in the junior age groups, where the biggest margin of victory was only five points.

After being a long way off the pace three seasons back, Glenwood now provides opposition teams with testing matches, and they continue to improve. They’ll bear watching.
