Michaelhouse produced a breathtaking display of aggressive batting at the Roy Gathorne Oval on Saturday, making short work of a target of 231 set by Westville Boys’ High.
The hosts needed only 34 overs to complete a comfortable six-wicket victory, with their openers setting the tone in a blistering start to the run chase.
Westville might have felt they had posted a competitive total after reaching 230/8 in their 50 overs, but Michaelhouse had other ideas. Graydon Leslie and Victor North came out with attacking intent and took the game away from the visitors by racing to 101 in just 10 overs.
Jamie Engelbrecht eventually broke the partnership, having Leslie caught by Elijah Stoop for a brisk 54 from 43 balls, which included six fours and two sixes.
North, however, was even more destructive. He plundered 60 from just 24 deliveries, clearing the boundary four times and finding it six times before falling in the 12th over. By then, Michaelhouse had already piled up 122 runs.
There was no let-up from the home side. Cody Sander contributed a quickfire 20 from 14 balls, while Ben Heuer added 34 to ensure the chase never lost momentum, and Michaelhouse reached their target with 16 overs in hand.
Earlier, Westville had elected to bat after winning the toss and finished with 230/8, recovering from a disappointing start through some useful middle-order contributions.
Jamie Hasselbach led the way with an attacking 52 from 44 balls, including two sixes and four fours. Yusuf Osman provided a patient 45, while Aarin Rasmussen added 39.
Westville’s best partnership came from Hasselbach and Rasmussen, who put on 84 for the sixth wicket. Osman and Kyle McGough, who scored 23, had earlier combined for 70 for the fourth wicket.
Rex Wardlaw was the standout bowler for Michaelhouse, claiming 4/40 from eight overs and accounting for Westville’s three leading run-scorers. Preston Greene provided excellent support, conceding only 26 runs in his 10 overs while taking two wickets.
For Westville, Engelbrecht claimed three wickets, while Rasmussen took two, but both paid dearly for their success. Engelbrecht conceded 67 runs from his 10 overs, with Rasmussen going for 68.
In the end, Westville’s 230 proved nowhere near enough to trouble a Michaelhouse side whose explosive opening partnership turned a potentially tricky chase into a doddle.
