CRICKET
Maritzburg College snatched a thrilling last-over victory from Durban High School (DHS) on the Theobald Oval on Saturday, with Luan van der Merwe striking the winning boundary to seal a three-wicket triumph with three balls to spare.
Chasing 280 after DHS had posted an imposing 279/7 in their 50 overs, College looked to be in a strong position at various stages, but the home side kept finding ways to drag themselves back into the contest. Ultimately, it took a composed unbeaten innings from Van der Merwe to get the visitors over the line.
DHS built their total around some excellent contributions from their middle order. Shaun Stumpke led the way, hammering eight fours and three sixes in a 58-ball 71, while Ismaeel Omar scored 63 from 103 deliveries.
Omar and Josh van Biljon added 48 for the third wicket, but the best partnership of the innings came from Stumpke and Bonga Maphanga, who put on 66 from just 62 balls for the sixth wicket. Van Biljon contributed 31, while Maphanga scored 27, and Matt Potgieter provided a late boost with an unbeaten 29 from only 20 deliveries.
Left-arm spinner Riley Palmer was the pick of the College attack, taking 2/32 from eight overs. Akhil Bharath claimed three wickets, conceding 45 runs, while Reece Willson picked up 2/65.
Maritzburg College needed to maintain a scoring rate of 5.6 runs per over, and they made an encouraging start through Bharath and Kyle de Bruyn, who put on 51 for the first wicket before Bharath departed for 22 in the 12th over.
De Bruyn then joined Dax Jursa in a commanding 103-run partnership from just 99 deliveries. Jursa contributed 35 before Maphanga bowled him, but De Bruyn continued to put pressure on the DHS attack.
His excellent innings ended two overs later when Omar ran him out for 92. De Bruyn had faced 100 balls, striking 11 fours and three sixes. When Luka Puddu followed shortly afterwards, College had slipped to 168/4 after 32 overs, leaving the match finely balanced.
Luan van der Merwe and Willson then took responsibility, adding 84 from 81 balls to keep College firmly in contention. Once again, however, a run-out broke up a crucial partnership, with Potgieter sending Willson back to the pavilion for 34.
With fewer than five overs remaining, College needed 28 runs. The dismissal of Luke Venter for one made the task more difficult, leaving the visitors requiring 20 from the final three overs.
Van der Merwe remained the key figure, but James Pembridge had little time to settle in.
College collected 10 from the 48th over, including a vital boundary from Van der Merwe, before AC Buys delivered an excellent penultimate over, conceding only five.
That left College needing five from the final six balls, with four wickets still in hand. Maphanga, who had already taken two wickets, was entrusted with the ball. Pembridge faced the first delivery, and Maphanga bowled a dot ball. Pembridge took three from the next delivery, bringing Van der Merwe back on strike.
The left-hander needed no further invitation, striking a four to take his tally to an unbeaten 74 from 61 balls, with eight fours and a six.
Maphanga finished with 2/40 from 9.3 overs, while Sharav Reddy was the most successful DHS bowler, returning an excellent 3/39 from his 10 overs.
It was a superb contest, but College held their nerve when it mattered most, with Van der Merwe delivering the decisive blow at the finish.
