On Dixon’s Oval, Glenwood and Northwood delivered a contest that swung repeatedly before the Green Machine held their nerve to clinch a dramatic two-run victory in a tightly fought limited overs encounter.
Despite conceding 27 extras to Northwood and finishing the match minus-17 on that front, Glenwood’s discipline at key moments proved decisive in a game that was alive until the final overs.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Glenwood made immediate inroads. Vincenzo Loutz struck twice up front, removing Ross McGlashan and Hamza Amla, while Jonah Chaita accounted for David de Bruyn to leave Northwood reeling on 9/3 inside five overs.
Luc Boyall and Josh Mills attempted to steady the innings, but when Esihle Gasa bowled Boyall, the Knights slipped to 25/4. The run out of Mills for 14 compounded their problems and left them struggling on 42/5 in the 21st over.
That was the cue for a measured recovery. Thomas Oosthuizen and Max Nicholson combined in a patient 45-run partnership from 112 balls, rebuilding carefully rather than chasing quick runs. Oosthuizen made 27 before departing, and Nicholson followed for 19, with Northwood 113/7 and time running out.
Momentum arrived through Keegan Reeves, whose counterattacking 50 from just 37 deliveries injected urgency. He struck five boundaries before being run out by Loutz, having added 49 in only 42 balls with Thabiso Mtambo.
Mtambo, supported by Trevor van Volenstee, guided Northwood to 177/8, finishing unbeaten on 24.
Loutz led Glenwood’s bowling with figures of 2/17 from six overs, while Gasa was miserly throughout, conceding just 19 runs from his 10 overs.
Northwood struck early in reply, with Josh Mills removing JP Pillay and Nuzayh Mohammed cheaply, both caught by Van Volenstee. Glenwood stabilised through Akhil Sinath and Kreesan Pillai, whose 51-run stand restored order.
After Sinath fell for 27, Glenwood wobbled to 93/5, but Pillai and Mishael Gunawardana rebuilt with a brisk 49-run partnership. Pillai’s innings of 65, the highest score of the match, anchored the chase before Reeves had him stumped.
Gunawardana’s composed 36 then carried Glenwood to within touching distance, and Jonah Chaita held his nerve at the end, finishing unbeaten on 18 as Glenwood crossed the line with two wickets in hand and 14 balls remaining.
Nicholson impressed with 2/22 from 10 overs for Northwood, while Mills and Reeves each claimed two wickets in a contest decided by composure under pressure.
Northwood ruled the roost on the cricket fields against Glenwood, but the win by the Green Machine’s 1st XI soothed some of the hurt caused by the other losses, with Northwood comfortably winning the remaining matches.

BASKETBALL
Northwood’s 1st team, the country’s best over the past two seasons, with back-to-back St John’s Basketball Tournament titles to their name, showed they remain a premier unit by racking up a record 116 points in a 116-50 win over Glenwood.
The most impressive aspect of their performance was their assured shooting, which is, for many other teams, their Achilles Heel.
Siya Shabala and Awande Chiliza exploded for 24 points and 19 rebounds each, while Sims Vacu dropped in 15 points.
While Northwood dominated the open age group, Glenwood’s competitiveness in the younger age groups showed there is talent coming through in the ranks. The u16 matches were especially tightly contested, with Northwood’s u16B team scraping a one-point win and the u16C side winning by nine.

WATER POLO
The honours in the pool went Northwood’s way, with convincing victories for all five teams in action. Their programme is ascending and they should challenge the top dogs – Kearsney, Clifton, and Hilton – this season, with Michaelhouse in a similar position.
