RUGBY SEVENS
Adding lustre to a sensational year from their 1st XV, the Westville Boys’ High’s Sevens side captured the High School Series national title in Potchefstroom on the weekend. They went unbeaten, too, like their 15-a-side team.
They dominated their pool matches, beating Helpmekaar 37-5, Welkom Gimnasium 25-12, Wesvalia 31-14, and Merensky Landbou 45-14.
In the quarterfinals, they scored a hard-fought 17-12 win over Waterkloof. Then, in the semi-finals, they ousted the defending champion, Grey College, winning 26-19.
Up against Northwood in the final, Westville fell 0-14 behind in the first half. After the break, though, they ran in three unconverted tries to score a 15-14 victory and with that laid claim to the title.
Lisa Sijadu was named the Player of the Final, while Sijadu, Lux Sonokonkono, and Ezra Karolisin were in included in the Dream Team.
