RUGBY

Westville’s unbeaten 1st XV faced a stiff test on Bowden’s Field, on Saturday, from Glenwood, who entered the game off a 16-30 defeat to Northwood, which had truly been decided only in the last two minutes of the contest.

The Green Machine, their morale boosted by that strong showing, gave the Griffin a torrid time, even taking a 25-21 lead early in the second half, but Westville’s class and skill told as they rattled off 21 unanswered points to record a 42-25 victory.

Jade-Will Koopman (feature photo), at flyhalf, carried on his superb kicking form following a perfect performance in Westville’s epic 33-28 win over DHS, converting each of the six tries the home side scored. Not only that, but he directed their attack with aplomb and imagination. He’s playing exceptional rugby at present.

Glenwood’s pack stood up well to the Westville forwards, but, in the end, four of the hosts’ tries came from the pack. It should be mentioned, though, that the last try of the match, scored by Moustapher Gcina, was from an intercept, which echoed his interception and score against KES in 2024 in a memorable 36-36 draw.

Something that caught the eye was the domination of Westville of all the age groups. They went undefeated, and although the u15A and u14A matches were closely contested, Westville’s strength in depth shone through.

HOCKEY

Not that long ago, Glenwood was a safe bet on the rugby field against Westville. Not longer!

On the hockey Astro, it was a different matter. The Green Machine went through some lean years in recent times, but the tide has turned and they’re on an upwards trajectory.

While Westville picked up eight wins, including a clean sweep of the u16 age group, Glenwood won the u14A game, and, impressively, fought back from two goals down to claim a 4-3 victory in the 1st XI match. They’ve upped their game in a big way in 2025 and that’s good to see.

Their A teams are very competitive and further improvement on the depth of their game down the age groups will go a long way towards ensuring they keep making strides.
