The King Price Derby Series showdown between Pretoria Boys High School and Maritzburg College on Saturday afternoon delivered an entertaining clash, typical of recent encounters between the schools, with College claiming a 45-28 victory in Pretoria.
It was a performance built on forward dominance, with College’s pack laying the foundation for their success, led by their captain and eighthman, Vasi Vyambwera. His powerful carries kept the visitors on the front foot and also brought him two tries, including the visitors’ opener.
Hooker Theo Boshoff was another standout, carrying strongly and ensuring pinpoint accuracy at lineout time.
Behind the pack, outside centre Amahle Hadebe grabbed his share of the spotlight. Running sharp, attacking lines, he tested the Boys High defence throughout and finished with two well-taken tries.
With the home crowd urging them on, Boys High found their rhythm in the final quarter. Their driving maul found traction and openside flank Tristan Heinz capitalised, dotting down twice, but it wasn’t enough to prevent College from claiming the spoils.
Special mention should be made of the kicks, who executed their duties with precision. Scrumhalf Dom du Toit was flawless for Maritzburg College, landing six conversions and a penalty, while Pretoria Boys fullback Blake Mager made his side’s four tries count the maximum by converting all of them.
Overall, it was a very good day for College. They won all of the nine open age group matches and finished with a record of 19 wins, only five defeats, and three draws.

HOCKEY
While College excelled on the rugby field, their hockey teams arguably did even better on the AstroTurf. Despite most matches being tightly contested, the Red, Black, and White won 11 of 19 games, drew seven, and lost only one.
Those results included a 2-1 win for the Red Army in the 1st XI match, which continued a run of success for Mark Sanders’ charges, who won five out of five at the KES Easter Festival.
