With injury and illness laying waste to Clifton‘s 1st XV, Michaelhouse pivoted an arranged a match against their brother school, Peterhouse, on Saturday, with Clifton’s depleted lineup taking on the ‘House 2nd XV.
Incredibly, on the day, Michaelhouse rugby teams played five different 1st XVs and won all five matches. One wonders if that is something that has ever been achieved before.
There was also an extremely unusual occurrence for the Michaelhouse 1st XV, which played on Baileys for the first time since 1955, it is believed. Meadows, as described by ‘House coach, James Fleming, was “a muddy mess” after heavy rains. On 3 May, it needs to be ready for the first Hilton/Michaelhouse derby of the year.
Peterhouse is Michaelhouse’s brother school – it was founded by former Michaelhouse Rector, Fred Snell, in 1955 – but it was a case of the big brother putting the little brother in his place, with ‘House powering their way to a 68-0 victory.
Alex Jankowitz, Rourke O’Sullivan, and Dan Aissing all dotted down twice, while William Ridl, Luke Mitchell, Nick Baker, and Dom Sesink-Clee also scored tries as Michaelhouse totalled 10 tries in all. Stefan Moolman converted nine of them to help the hosts to a one-sided win.

HOCKEY
The Michaelhouse 1st XI’s strong season continued with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Clifton. They took the lead after a fantastic, sweeping counterattack in the first chukka. but had to wait until four minutes from time to seal the win from a penalty corner.
It has been a frustrating season for Clifton, who have been solid in the midfield and defence, but have struggled to score.
The absence of SA u17 player Ryde Brissett has hurt them, both at penalty corner time, and from a creative perspective. The fact of the matter is, though, that he is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, so Clifton needs to go on without him.
Coach Calvin Price and his boys will next be in action in Gqeberha, at the Standard Bank Hibbert Shield, where they’ve been drawn in Pool B with the defending champions, Paul Roos Gimnasium, Maritzburg College, and Selborne College.
The Hibbert Shield is currently the toughest hockey tournament in the country, so Clifton faces a big challenge.
Results mostly favoured Michaelhouse, but Clifton’s u16A side registered an emphatic win. The ‘House u14As, though, had their way with the Durban visitors.
