CRICKET

A week after beating Durban High School (DHS) at home, Kearsney College‘s young 1st XI produced another stunning performance to score an emphatic 96-run victory at Northwood.

The Knights‘ captain Kyle White was surely hoping for a repeat of his side’s performance in a seven-wicket win over Hilton the previous weekend, when he opted to bowl first. Northwood restricted to 110/8 in 50 overs in that match, but Kearsney fared a lot better than that.

A solid second-wicket partnership of 49 between captain Jason De Gryse and Keegan de Jager set them on track for a decent total, but Jordan Matthews ended their stand when he had De Gryse caught for 15.

Northwood, then, grabbed a couple more wickets cheaply to have Kearsney’s run rate in check on 79/4 after 31.2 overs.

De Jager and Cole Young, though, gave the innings some momentum with a 44-run stand for the fifth wicket from 60 balls. Jamie Wimble accounted for De Jager, but not after the number three batsman had made a telling impact. He scored 69 from 116 deliveries, with four fours and three sixes. His departure left Kearsney on 123/5.

Cole Young and Nic Comrie kept up the good work from the visitors and accelerated the run-scoring further, adding 47 from 46 balls before Young was dismissed for 42 from 49 after striking a six and four fours. Comrie went on to score 20.

At the end, three wickets fell in short succession as Kearsney’s batsmen chased boundaries and quick runs. They completed their 50 overs on 178/9.

Luke Allen led the Northwood attack, knocking over 3/32 in nine overs, while Jordan Matthews claimed 2/36 from 10, and Kyle White a tidy 1/27 from 10.

The Knights’ reply suffered a big blow when Litha Gonya got rid of David de Bruyn in the first over, but Tuswa Phetha and Morgan Jones put on 29 runs for the second wicket. After Phetha fell for five, Jones and White added another 20 runs before the skipper fell to Nic Comrie.

His departure was followed by a big collapse as Northwood went from 49/2 after 15.3 overs to 58/8 after 25.3. Six wickets went down while only nine runs were scored.

There was no coming back from that and the home side’s innings finished on 82 runs. Morgan Jones stood tall with 36 runs, but only Luke Allen, with 16, joined him in double figures.

Litha Gonya claimed 3/29 in 8.5 overs, while Nic Comrie and Matthew Gorrie both picked up 2/6, and Rivan Moodley 2/9, with each of the two-wicket-takers going at well under two runs an over.

BASKETBALL

A slow start doomed Kearsney’s 1st basketball team in their showdown with Northwood in the SportZone on Saturday.

With the Knights applying heavy pressure, Kearsney turned the ball over early and often in the first quarter, which led to the visitors racing into a 20-5 lead.

In the second quarter, Kearsney found their way and went almost point-for-point with Northwood, but at the end of two the Durban school led 41-23.

It remained competitive over the next two quarters, but Northwood had already the damage that would win them the game. It ended 76-53 in their favour.

Simamukele Vacu had himself a day, scoring 33 points for the Knights, while Awande Chiliza weighed in with 16. Lwandile Njapha, with 10, and Markus Wise and James Hastings-Brown, with nine each, led the way for Kearsney.
