The dial gets turned up on the KwaZulu-Natal Sevens season on Saturday at the Glenwood Sevens, where a number of schools, now that their derby seasons are done, will make their season’s debut in the seven-a-side form of the game.
It will be a first outing for the hosts, Glenwood, as well as Northwood, Durban High School (DHS), Vryheid Landbou, Pinetown Boys’ High and Maritzburg College.
They’ll contest the u17 competition, which also includes Clifton College, Kearsney College, Hilton College, St Charles College, Westville Boys’ High and Michaelhouse, who were in action at the Saints Sevens last weekend.
Catch the action on DStv Channel 216 or watch online on SuperSport Schools.
In Pietermaritzburg, Westville came from behind to beat St Charles in the final to make it back-to-back wins following their triumph in the Clifton Sevens on 21 July.
Westville’s side is settled. They played an u17 team in both of the previous tournaments, which will serve them well. They will, however, be without the playmaking Zekhethelo Siyaya, who has been omitted as he prepares to represent SA u18 in the International Series against England, Ireland and France.
While Westville’s form is strong and their lineup is familiar, some of the sides that took part in the previous events used u18 players, so they’ll have to make some changes.
Of course, the addition of new teams also makes Saturday’s tournament far less predictable. DHS, who will be making their first appearance this season, captured the Glenwood Sevens title last year with a 21-19 win over Westville.

There are 16 teams in the u17 tournament, while 12 will compete for the u15 title. The newcomers in the u15 age group on Saturday include Glenwood, DHS, Northwood, Maritzburg College and Esikhawini.
Last weekend, Michaelhouse won the Saints Sevens, beating Westville 14-7 in the final. Clifton sprang a big surprise, just missing out on the title-decider on points’ difference. Their results included a 29-0 win over the champions, Michaelhouse.
Westville are the defending champions. They claimed the title in style last season, convincingly beating DHS 31-12 in the final.
