RUGBY
Kearsney College‘s remarkable late season turnaround continued in Johannesburg on Saturday, with the One-Stripe overrunning St Stithians College 50-12.
The victory was their fourth in succession, following wins over Glenwood, Clifton and Michaelhouse.
Doan Nel and Valentino Lenge crossed for a brace of tries each, while Callum Steer, Bukho Hlwatika and Connor McIntyre also dotted down as Kearsney laid down the law.
It speaks volumes for the character of the team that, after enduring a long mid-season slide, they have fought back to put a strong winning streak together.
While the KZN school’s 3rds and 4ths won without conceding a point, the 2nd XV was surprised by Saints.
The Johannesburg school also claimed a narrow victory in the u16A match, but Kearsney romped to a big win in the u15A game. Saints reversed that result in the clash of the B teams.
Kearsney won u14A match, but once again the honours in the B sides’ meeting went the way of Saints.
Overall, Kearsney won eight matches to the four of St Stithians.

HOCKEY
Much like the Kearsney 1st XV has experienced a late season uptick in their fortunes, so, too, has the St Stithians’ 1st hockey XI. The return of Kwena Maphaka, their captain, from doing duty in the Indian Premier League has provided a welcome boost.
Under Friday night lights, Saints pulled out a 4-3 win over a Kearsney team that has enjoyed a strong season. That, however, was their only success in 10 matches.
The 2nd XIs drew, but Kearsney won the remaining eight games, with the four u16 sides not conceding a single goal while scoring 24.
