23 February 2023
Glenwood High School hosted the 2023 Durban and District Gala on Wednesday evening, with the hosts taking on Clifton, Durban High School, Northwood, Westville Boys’ High and Kearsney College.
From three galas earlier in the season – the Affies Gala in Pretoria, the Alan Burt Gala in Johannesburg, and the Nestor Pierides Gala at Westville – it was clear that the battle of the top at the standings was going to be between Westville Boys’ High and DHS. In the end, it was Westville, the winners of the three afore-mentioned galas, who came out on top, but they were given a superb fight by DHS.
Closely-contested
At the completion of the programme, the Griffin held just a 10-point margin over DHS, finishing on 134 points to the Durbanites’ 124.
Northwood enjoyed a strong showing, securing a convincing third place on 94 points. Clifton followed on 77, while Kearsney finished on 65 and Glenwood on 40.
While Westville has an enviable record of strength in depth, it was interesting to note that DHS made a clean sweep of all five events in the under-17 races.

Westville, though, especially in the younger age groups, clearly have fantastic swimmers coming through, and that stands them in good stead for the near future.
DHS, for their part, continue to improve and certainly rank among the elite teams in the country at present. Runners-up finishes to Westville in the Affies and Alan Burt Galas, and fourth in the Nestor Pierides Gala (behind two teams they had previously beaten in 2023) attests to that fact.
