It didn’t start that way, though. Glenwood made the early running, capitalising on a rare Hilton mistake when scrumhalf Zander Vorster lost the ball under pressure. Mkhululi Mhlongo was quickest to react and pounced for the opening try. Josh Kopp added a penalty shortly after, and the Green Machine was 8–5 to the good.

But that was where Hilton clicked into gear. Left wing Ricky Adonis struck back with a try after a deft pop pass from Tristan Uys, and from there the hosts took control.

Vorster, dangerous around the fringes, muscled over from close range to give Hilton the lead for good. Liyema Nela added a penalty before hooker Josh Grant, who has a nose for the line, finished off a sustained assault from the forwards to make it 22–8 at the break.

If the first half had shown Hilton’s control, the second half revealed their flair.

Nela, who was central to everything good about the hosts’ performance, sparked a sweeping counterattack with a sharp step and offload to Adonis. The winger weaved inside before linking with Emmanuel Dankwah, and the powerful flank finished off a top-drawer team try. The conversion, after bouncing off the right upright and over, reflected the home team’s momentum.

Zander Muller then crossed from a quick tap and Uys deservedly went over for five with a slicing solo run from 35 metres out.

Hilton’s cohesion was evident throughout. The forwards laid the platform, the backs ran with purpose, and the interplay between the two was seamless.

To Glenwood’s credit, they never threw in the towel. Captain Lizwe Mtetwa barged over after a strong angled run, but the day belonged to Hilton. Kyle-Reese Clements capped the performance with a final try as the clock wound down.

The 53–15 scoreline reflected Hilton’s dominance, but more than that, it showcased a team playing intelligent, connected rugby.

Hilton’s u16A and u15A teams scraped narrow wins over Glenwood, but their u14A side won emphatically.

Overall, though, Hilton picked up eight wins, Glenwood won seven games, and there was one draw.
