CRICKET

There is, undoubtedly, enviable talent in KZN’s leading boys’ cricket teams. The biggest challenge for the coaches and players is consistency, getting multiple players to fire at once. On Saturday, in Pietermaritzburg, St Charles College showed what it looks like when consistency shows its face.

Up against Westville Boys’ High, Saints produced an impressive all-round performance, recording an emphatic 73-run victory on their home turf.

Batting first, St Charles posted 264/3 from their 50 overs, thanks largely to an unbeaten century from Ryan Clarke (feature photo, courtesy of Justin Waldman Sports Photography), and an excellent supporting innings from Caleb Sharp.

The hosts lost Christiaan Prinsloo for 11, run out, before Kyle McGough trapped Owen Widdows LBW for 30. Thando Zama and Clarke then added 42 for the third wicket, with Zama departing for 24 to leave Saints on 86/3 in the 21st over.

That proved to be Westville’s last breakthrough.

Clarke and Sharp took control, compiling an unbroken 178-run partnership for the fourth wicket, scoring at a run a ball, to transform the innings and leave the visitors with a daunting chase.

Clarke struck 109 not out from 121 deliveries, finding the boundary 11 times and clearing it once. Sharp was equally assured, finishing unbeaten on 81 from 87 balls, with nine fours.

McGough returned 1/36 from eight overs, while Josh Engelbrecht claimed 1/41 from his 10 overs.

Westville began their reply positively, with Aidan Baudach and Jordan Doig putting on 68 for the first wicket in just over 16 overs. Connor Simpson broke the stand when he had Doig caught by Prinsloo for 27, and Baudach followed in the 21st over for 35, caught by Connor Vogt off Simpson.

The Griffins struggled to maintain their momentum thereafter. Although McGough scored 18, Yusuf Osman made a run-a-ball 33, and Aarin Rasmussen contributed an unbeaten 21, Westville lost seven wickets for just 30 runs, crashing from 114/2 to 144/9, as Saints seized control.

Kaiyuran Naidoo led the charge with 4/37 from 10 overs, while Sharp backed up his batting heroics with an economical 2/25 from his 10 overs. Simpson finished with 2/38.

Westville’s last-wicket pair provided some late resistance, with Engelbrecht attacking his way to 34 from just 23 balls, including seven fours. He and Rasmussen added 47, the highest partnership of the visitors’ innings.

However, Jayden Saville bowled Engelbrecht to bring the innings to an end in the 45th over, with Westville all out for 191.

St Charles College 264/3 (Ryan Clarke 109*, Caleb Sharpe 81*, Owen Widdows 30, Thando Zama 24; Kyle McGough 1/36); Westville Boys’ High 191/10 (Aidan Baudach 35, Josh Engelbrecht 34, Yusuf Osman 33; Kaiyuran Naidoo 4/37, Caleb Sharpe 2/25, Connor Simpson 2/38). St Charles College won by 73 runs.

Overall, Westville recorded seven wins to three by St Charles.

In a cracking contest, the Griffins won the 3rd XI game by only four runs. Their powerful U15A side claimed another scalp, but the St Charles U14A team produced a stunning bowling performance to skittle Westville for only 29 runs. Credit to Westville, they didn’t roll over after that. They claimed four wickets before Saints won.
