WATER POLO

Hilton College‘s water polo programme excelled on the weekend, with the school’s sides making the final of all three KZN Top 10 tournaments – at U14, U15, and 1st team level – although only the U14A side was able to take the final step and lift a trophy.

Combined, however, the efforts of the three teams secured Hilton the overall title, just ahead of Kearsney College, the winners in 2024 and 2025.

Maritzburg College finished sixth overall, and that had plenty to do with their U14A side, who enjoyed a fantastic two days. They narrowly lost 4-5 to Kearsney College in the semifinals, but grabbed the bronze medals in style, downing Northwood 7-3.

Maritzburg College vs Hilton College

Reece Willson produced a superb bowling performance to lead Maritzburg College to a four-wicket victory over Hilton College in a limited-overs clash at Goldstone’s on Saturday.

The fast bowler made Hilton captain Rob Burman regret his decision to bat first, claiming an outstanding 5/21 in his 10 overs to help dismiss the visitors for 150 in 34.5 overs.

Willson and his new-ball partner Greg Hosking set Hilton on the back foot early, reducing them to 32/3 in the ninth over. Hilton struggled to build partnerships from there, with Sange Qangule the notable exception.

Qangule took the fight to College’s bowlers, smashing five fours and four sixes in a rapid 52 off just 38 deliveries. He also shared the innings’ best partnership, adding 45 for the seventh wicket with Cameron Hargroves. Hargroves was one of five Hilton batsmen to reach double figures, but Ben Wilson’s 16 was the next-best score.

Hosking provided excellent support to Willson, finishing with 2/25 in 5.5 overs.

College’s target of 151 appeared modest, but the hosts also endured a shaky start, slipping to 40/4 in the 11th over.

With the innings in need of stability, Dax Jursa and Luan van der Merwe stepped up, combining for a decisive 66-run sixth-wicket partnership in just under 14 overs. Jursa eventually departed with the total on 106, having struck seven fours and a six in his team-high 44.

Van der Merwe continued to anchor the chase, adding 16 with Willson before joining James Pembridge in an unbroken 30-run stand that carried College to victory in the 36th over. Van der Merwe finished unbeaten on 32 from 59 balls.

Hilton’s bowling lacked consistency at times, with 26 wides adding to College’s total and easing the pressure on the home side.

Qangule completed a fine all-round display with 3/47 in nine overs, while Sechaba Gude claimed 2/21 in 7.1. However, Willson’s devastating spell and the recovery led by Jursa and van der Merwe proved decisive as College secured a hard-earned four-wicket win.

In like-for-like matches, competition was keen, with Maritzburg College scoring three victories to Hilton’s two. College’s U14A side stole the spotlight by putting up an intimidating 354/4 against the Hilton U14A side.

BASKETBALL

Maritzburg College’s high-intensity, fast-paced game proved to be too much for Hilton (see video highlights above) in the Alan Paton Memorial Hall and Multi-Purpose Centre. Few teams have been able to withstand College’s relentless pace in 2026, and Hilton was merely the latest victim of an impressive outfit.

Overall, it was Maritzburg College’s day. Overall, they won 17 games to Hilton’s two, with both of Hilton’s wins coming in the U16 age group.
