Kearsney U15 wins KZN Top 10, Michaelhouse 1st XI downs Hilton

13 October 2026

Kearsney College and Michaelhouse were in action at the KZN Top 10 Water Polo tournaments over the weekend.

Kearsney’s outstanding U15 side, which recently won the prestigious Ian Melliar Water Polo Tournament, won the tournament at Westville Boys’ High, demonstrating enviable BMT to come away with victories in tight semi-final and final matches. In the semis, they edged out Clifton 5-4, then they beat Hilton 7-6 in the title game.

House went down 7-8 to Hilton in the other semifinal, then had to settle for fourth after a tough 6-7 defeat to Clifton.

Kearsney’s 1st team finished third in the senior event at the Clifton Aquatic Centre, and Michaelhouse placed fifth, while Hilton beat Kearsney 7-3 in the U14 final at Northwood. Michaelhouse ended in fifth place after a comfortable 9-2 win over Westville.

In the clash of the 1st teams on Saturday, Kearsney downed Michaelhouse 9-4.

Hilton took the overall title, with 29 points to Kearsney’s 28, to prevent the Botha’s Hill bunch from lifting the trophy for a third successive year. Michaelhouse was fifth, one point behind Northwood.

Michaelhouse and Hilton faced off in the Eston One Insurance Night League on Tuesday evening, and it was the Balgowan Boys who came away with an emphatic 59-run victory behind the batting of Ben Heuer and Victor North.

After he won the toss, House skipper Graydon Leslie chose to bat, but he was out early for seven. By then, though, North was already finding his range. Joined by Heuer, he helped Michaelhouse take control with a decisive 94-run partnership off only 58 balls for the second wicket.

North’s entertaining 58 from 37 deliveries included seven fours and a six before Sean Burman ended the stand in the 12th over.

Hilton picked up further wickets, but Heuer remained a thorn in their side, batting until the final over before Sanqe Qangule dismissed him for an excellent 72 off 49 balls. He struck four fours and three sixes.

Riley Muir added an unbeaten 20 off just 11 deliveries, sharing a quickfire 45-run fifth-wicket stand with Heuer off only 26 balls as Michaelhouse surged to 193/5.

Hilton’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, with Cameron Hargroves the pick of the attack, taking 2/25 in three overs.

In reply, Hilton never seriously threatened Michaelhouse’s imposing total. Ben Wilson top-scored with an unbeaten 52 off 44 balls, including four fours, but only three other batsmen reached double figures.

Heuer made another valuable contribution, claiming 2/17 in three overs and striking late to restrict Hilton’s scoring. Nishay Sedhoowa also took two wickets, dismissing Hilton captain Robert Burman and Hargroves for 16 apiece to finish with 2/26.

Hilton’s innings closed on 134/6, leaving Michaelhouse the comfortable winners.

Scorecard

Michaelhouse 193/5 (Ben Heuer 72, Victor North 58, Riley Muir 20*; Cameron Hargroves 2/25); Hilton College 134/6 (Ben Wilson 52*; Ben Heuer 2/17, Nishay Sedhoowa 2/26). Michaelhouse won by 59 runs.

Michaelhouse vs Kearsney College

On Saturday, Kearsney College produced a composed run chase to secure a convincing seven-wicket victory over Michaelhouse on the Roy Gathorne Oval.

After winning the toss and batting first, Michaelhouse struggled to build substantial partnerships, with Graydon Leslie, Rex Wardlaw, and Riley Muir sharing the innings’ highest score of 40. Muir was the quickest of the trio, facing 45 balls and striking five fours.

Victor North added 21 and shared a 48-run opening stand with Leslie, but Kearsney’s bowlers kept the scoring in check, dismissing the hosts for 183 in 42 overs.

Leg-spinner Rivaan Moodley led the visitors’ attack with an impressive 4/47 in 10 overs, while left-arm leg-spinner Matthew Gorrie claimed 2/29 from his 10.

Kearsney’s batsmen then made light work of the target. Gary Verbaan and Moodley put on 27 for the first wicket before Moodley fell for 15. Verbaan found a willing partner in Keegan de Jager, and the pair added 72 for the second wicket to put the visitors firmly in control.

De Jager departed for 42 in the 22nd over, caught by Muir off Wardlaw, but Verbaan continued to anchor the chase. He scored a patient 79 off 109 balls, including eight fours and a six, before falling with Kearsney just five runs short of victory.

Three balls later, Aaron Blackburn, unbeaten on 38, helped seal the win.

Michaelhouse used eight bowlers in an attempt to disrupt Kearsney’s progress, but the visitors from Botha’s Hill remained in command, completing a comfortable seven-wicket triumph after 37.3 overs.
