The St Charles College 1st XI delivered a dominant performance at the SCC Oval on Saturday, dismissing Glenwood High for just 98 before cruising to a nine-wicket victory.

Glenwood’s decision to bat first quickly turned into a nightmare as the visitors slumped to 16/7 after 11 overs, with the St Charles opening pair of Ryan Clarke and Jayden Saville ripping through their top order.

Amid the carnage, Sebastian Oertel stood firm, finding a determined ally in Charles Nkwanyana. The pair dug in for 19 overs, adding 51 runs for the eighth wicket to give Glenwood’s innings some respectability.

Saville eventually broke the partnership, with Clarke taking the catch to dismiss Oertel for 35. The batsman had faced 74 deliveries and struck five fours.

Nkwanyana continued to resist alongside Esihle Gasa, adding another 17 runs before falling for a stubborn 23 off 77 balls. Glenwood’s innings ended in the 41st over, with the visitors all out for 98.

Saville led the attack with an outstanding 5/22, while Clarke claimed 4/18. Kaiyuran Naidoo picked up the remaining wicket.

St Charles made an ideal start to their modest run chase, with openers Christiaan Prinsloo and Owen Widdows putting on 56 for the first wicket. Widdows struck six fours in his 36 before being stumped by Oertel off Kreesan Pillai in the 14th over.

Captain Thando Zama joined Prinsloo, and the pair calmly completed the job, adding an unbeaten 46-run partnership to seal victory in the 25th over.

Prinsloo finished unbeaten on 37, while Zama contributed 23 not out as St Charles wrapped up a comprehensive nine-wicket win.

It was St Charles’s day on the cricket fields, with Saints dominating…except for one Glenwood team that stood up to the challenge. Props to the Glenwood U14B team, which reversed a tough day out for the Durban school, winning by a hard-fought three wickets.
