CRICKET

Westville Boys’ High, Northwood, and Durban High School (DHS) represented KwaZulu-Natal’s interests at the Wildeklawer North-South T20 in Pretoria from Thursday to Sunday, with the Griffins, remarkably, being involved in two contests decided by Super Overs.

They were somewhat unlucky to miss out on the Cup quarterfinals after recording two wins in their three group stage games. One of those was after a Super Over, and that ultimately cost the Griffins as they missed out on the top eight by one bonus point.

They won their Plate quarterfinal clash comfortably against the CSA Hub XI. Then, they were involved in a second Super Over showdown in the semifinals. This time, it went against Westville, with Rondebosch Boys’ High scoring 20 runs and Westville replying with 19 in the six-ball shootout.

That put Westville into the 11th/12th playoff, where they went down to Jeppe High School for Boys, the national T20 champions, by 20 runs.

Clifton 1st XI vs Dolphins Hub U19

Clifton College‘s Daniyaal Klinck and Hayden Drieselmann both struck centuries at the Riverside Sports Club in Durban, powering the hosts to a formidable 398/7 in their 50 overs against the Dolphins Hub.

Klinck set the tone from the outset, facing the first ball of the innings and going on to produce the highest score of the match, an outstanding 143. He struck 16 fours and three sixes in a commanding display that laid the foundation for Clifton’s imposing total.

He and Drieselmann dominated the middle overs, combining for a massive 217-run third-wicket partnership off 190 deliveries. Their stand was finally broken in the 41st over when Klinck departed, having done much of the damage.

Clifton captain Shiraz Perumal ensured there was no let-up in the scoring, blasting 25 off just 11 balls, including three sixes, while Drieselmann continued to pile on the runs before falling in the 46th over. He faced 102 deliveries, hitting 14 fours and two sixes on his way to 131.

There was still time for some late fireworks, with Blake Johnson smashing an unbeaten 43 off only 17 balls. His entertaining cameo included four fours and two sixes, helping Clifton finish with a total that would prove well beyond the Dolphins Hub’s reach.

Aphele Hlophe was the pick of the Hub’s bowlers, claiming 3/43 in six overs, while opening bowler Sqalo Mbatha picked up two wickets. However, Mbatha took a pounding from Klinck and Drieselmann, conceding 97 runs from his 10 overs.

The Dolphins Hub’s reply began positively enough, with Hlophe and Shakho Thusini putting together an opening stand of 38 inside the first six overs. However, George Gooch broke the partnership, and the visitors struggled to regain their momentum.

Thusini contributed 25, while Hlophe showed patience in making 22, but the rest of the batting order offered little resistance. Seven of the remaining batsmen failed to score more than four runs, leaving the Hub in danger of falling well short of 100.

Fanele Mpisane provided some much-needed resistance, though, producing a determined innings that briefly gave the visitors something to celebrate. He struck four fours and three sixes in a 45-ball stay, reaching 50 before becoming the final wicket to fall.

Mpisane’s effort was not enough to prevent a comprehensive defeat. The Dolphins Hub was dismissed for 123 in the 26th over, leaving hand Clifton with a commanding 275-run victory.

Keegan Watson led the home side’s attack with an impressive 5/24, while Gooch returned figures of 2/18, and Perumal chipped in with 2/29.

After their batsmen had piled up nearly 400 runs, Clifton’s bowlers completed the job in style, sealing a dominant all-round performance.
