Maritzburg College signed off their season in emphatic fashion on Saturday, overpowering Glenwood High 64-7 on Goldstone’s in Pietermaritzburg.
The Green Machine last beat the Red, Black, and White in the last match of the 2023 season, claiming a 27-24 win after losing 15-42 on Goldstone’s earlier in the season. The flyhalf in the 2023 College side was Luc du Toit, who was also the team’s kicker. College’s team on Saturday featured his brother, Dom, who enjoyed a stellar outing, scoring two tries and kicking seven conversions for an individual haul of 24 points.
Glenwood defended resolutely early on, but once Brent Smith broke the deadlock by crashing over in the 20th minute, College took control.
Three minutes later, College struck again. Liyema Tsoko broke the line and fed Luthando Dladla on his inside, which allowed the outside centre to race clear score next to the posts.
Fullback Sandiswa Hadebe then sparked an attack from deep and, after College won possession in the Glenwood 22, captain Rory Stanton found a way through for a third try in eight minutes. Du Toit slotted a third successive conversion kick to make it 21-0.
Glenwood refused to fold, though, and a powerful run from replacement prop Lethu Masondo gave them something to show for their efforts. He shrugged off three tackles after Glenwood tapped a penalty and crashed over, with Vincenzo Loutz converting to make it 21-7 at the break.
That, however, was as good as it got for the visitors.
In the opening minutes of the second half, College was held up twice, but Du Toit finally found a gap to score after taking a pass from Stanton.
The hosts continued to punish Glenwood around the fringes, using short passes off the back of rucks and powerful runners to keep the defence retreating. Kingston Hawkins finished off another slick move in the corner before Du Toit added a fine conversion.
Glenwood, then, enjoyed a spell of pressure in College territory, but their failure to turn promising lineouts into points proved costly. With the Green Machine heavily on the attack, Matthew Harris intercepted a pass and raced almost 80 metres to score, before Du Toit added another difficult conversion.
The final 13 minutes produced 24 more points, with Lwanzo Vyambwera, Du Toit, Sakhokuhle Xaba, and Alanda Ngubane all crossing the whitewash as College finished with a flourish.
Their victory was built on dominance around the fringes and their ability to recognise when to shift the ball wide.
With the win, Maritzburg College finished an encouraging season with 11 wins. It was a more difficult season for Glenwood. They posted only four victories.
HOCKEY
On the Astro, College had the upper hand.
In April, playing in Durban, the Glenwood 1st XI had fought their way back from a 0-2 deficit to draw 2-2. There were four more goals in the game on Saturday, on Pape’s Astro, but they all belonged to College.
The hosts also won the U16A and U14A matches, and dominated with their depth lower down the fixture list.

FOOTBALL
The Glenwood 1st football team was in action over the long weekend at the Curro Halala Cup at Heronbridge College, facing an elite field of teams from across South Africa.
They had the misfortune of being drawn in an extremely tough Pool C, which included, among others, the defending champ, Northern Academy, St Anne’s Technical School, who went on to win it all, and Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sport School, who made it to the semi-finals, which meant that Northern Academy missed out on the quarterfinals. That served to underline how tough the group was.
Glenwood posted a 3-2 win over Curro Hazeldean and beat Waterstone College 2-0, but lost 0-1 to St Anne’s, 2-5 to Rosina Sedibane, and 0-1 to Northern Academy.
Glenwood subsequently beat Norkem Park, the 2025 runner-up, 2-1 in the Plate quarterfinals. Then, in the semi-finals, they suffered a penalty shootout loss to Camps Bay High, going down 1-2 from the spot after sharing a 1-1 draw.
In the 11th-place playoff, the Green Machine lost 0-3 to Barberton High.
Maritzburg College, meanwhile, faced Clifton College during the week.
College won the two open age group matches and also won the U16A clash. The U15A match finished in an entertaining six-goal draw, while Clifton came out on top in the U14A game.
