On Friday night, it was the Kearsney College 1st XI’s turn to shine on the Mason Astro, where they hung a 3-0 defeat on Durban High School (DHS).
However, on Saturday, at Stott Field, the DHS 1st XV stole the spotlight, returning to winning ways with a 36-24 victory over Kearsney after a strong finish to the first half laid the foundation for their success.
School struck in only the second minute when Sterling Padi finished off a sweeping counterattack from 45 metres out after a loose Kearsney pass. Tanwill Onkers added the conversion.
Kearsney responded through a Daniel Miskey penalty before the hosts produced one of the tries of the day. Miskey chipped ahead from deep inside his own half, Tom Aylward gathered superbly near halfway, and Keanu Williamson quickly shifted the ball wide to wing Lwandile Mkhize, who beat four defenders in a dazzling run to the try line.
Onkers levelled matters with a penalty before the game swung decisively just before halftime. A yellow card reduced Kearsney to 14 men, and DHS capitalised ruthlessly through converted tries by Okuhle Mbanjwa and Damien Swart to open up a 24-10 lead at the break.
After halftime, Cilermo Carolus and Amo Matoboge crossed for further DHS tries as the visitors extended their advantage.
To their credit, Kearsney continued to fight until the end. Clement Makalele scored late on, while a penalty try completed the scoring, but DHS had already done enough to secure an impressive away victory.

The Kearsney 1st XI started the season slowly, but they’ve worked their way into fine form. On Friday evening, they brought cheer to their home supporters when they defended their Mason Astro stronghold, upsetting a favoured DHS team 3-0.
Two goals from Dylan Forbes and another from Simnene Kubheka secured a solid victory for coach Keegan Pearce‘s charges.
The open age group matches swung Kearsney’s way, three to one. At u16 level, DHS won three, Kearsney one, and the A teams drew. The DHS u14 sides recorded a clean sweep, though, which left the overall record at four wins to Kearsney, eight for DHS, and one draw.
