KZN 1st XVs struggle at Grey High Fest; better age group results

28 April 2026

Throughout the long weekend, at the Absa Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley and the Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival in Gqeberha, KZN schools were competitive, but they often found themselves on the wrong end of results. In fact, the only 1st XV to win at the Grey festival was Michaelhouse, who hammered St Andrew’s College 41-5 on Monday.

The Makhanda side was made to pay for ‘House‘s unexpected loss to Grey High on Saturday, with coach Marco Engelbrecht‘s boys going down 19-28 after leading 19-15.

Kearsney College twice came up narrowly short. They lost by two points to Graeme College when a last-second penalty kick to win the game drifted wide left, and they fell by five against a surging SACS team on Monday.

St Charles College gave Kingswood a good go, but lost by three in their opener. Graeme, who’ve been stitching together another strong season, had their number on Monday, winning 43-17.

Glenwood High was handed two tough assignments, taking on Rondebosch Boys’ High and Grey High. The Green Machine had their moments, but both ‘Bosch and Grey were comfortable winners by 20 and 22 points, respectively.

KZN sides fared better at age-group levels, with Kearsney’s u15A and u14A sides returning clean records, while for many others it was a case of winning one and losing one.

Clifton College vs Hoërskool Suid-Natal

Clifton College wasn’t in festival action. They headed down the South Coast to face Hoërskool Suid-Natal on Saturday.

The Durban boys would have expected to win, but with well over half their preferred starting 1st XV out of action with injuries after the St Stithians Easter Festival, they faced a tough challenge. It proved to be just beyond them.

Suid-Natal scraped a narrow 29-26 1st XV win, but Clifton’s u16A side triumphed 19-5. The South Coast locals showed their teeth, however, by claiming a hard-fought 15-10 victory in the u15A game, and a comfortable 36-7 win in the u14A match.
