Omar stars in DHS 1st XI victory over Hilton, DHS wins basketball

3 February 2026

Durban High School’s Theobald Oval baking under a relentless sun on Saturday, turning School‘s limited-overs contest against Hilton College into a stern test of endurance as much as skill.

In conditions that sapped energy and punished even the fittest legs, DHS opener Ismaeel Omar produced an innings of rare discipline and maturity, carrying his bat for an unbeaten century to steer the home side to a commanding eight-wicket win.

Winning the toss, DHS captain Josh van Biljon had no hesitation in sending Hilton in, and he was rewarded almost immediately. New-ball bowler Taine Havermann struck twice inside the opening three overs to remove the dangerous opening pair of Barack Munawa and Ben Wilson, a combination that has underpinned much of Hilton’s success this season.

It was the ideal start for the home side, with early pressure applied both on the scoreboard and in the searing heat.

Hilton, though, showed commendable resilience through James Peattie and skipper Robert Burman. The pair knuckled down and grafted for close to 20 overs, adding 78 valuable runs for the third wicket.

Burman led from the front with a composed 45, decorated with six boundaries, before Josh Morley broke the partnership by having Burman caught by Seth Edwards.

Peattie pressed on with Obakeng Motsepa, and the visitors inched their way forward, but wickets began to fall in a cluster. From a relatively healthy 129/4 in the 30th over, Hilton slid to 142/7 just four overs later.

Peattie, who had anchored the innings superbly for his 50 off 95 balls, was the key scalp in that collapse.

The lower order, however, refused to fold. Sange Qangule injected late momentum with a ferocious cameo, smashing four fours and two sixes in a 34-ball 48. His resistance lifted Hilton to a competitive 219 all out in 48.1 overs, before he became Havermann’s fourth victim.

Havermann’s 4/39 in 9.1 overs set the tone, ably supported by Seth Edwards (2/11) and Bonga Maphanga (2/36).

Chasing in oppressive heat is never straightforward, but Omar and Suliman Jadwat made it look routine. Their 111-run opening stand in just over 28 overs steadily drained the life from the Hilton attack.

After Jadwat fell for a well-made 44, Van Biljon joined Omar and the pair added another 107 for the second wicket, effectively sealing the contest.

Van Biljon’s 57 was ended with the winning line in sight, but it was little more than a footnote on a day that belonged to Omar.

Unbeaten on 105 from 124 balls, with 16 fours and a six, he was the embodiment of composure and concentration, guiding DHS home in furnace-like conditions and underlining their strength on familiar turf.
