Fresh from securing an impressive third place at the Wildeklawer North-South T20, Northwood carried that momentum into their 50-over clash with St Charles College at the Robin Smith Oval on Saturday, powering to a comprehensive 121-run victory.
Batting first in Durban’s heat and humidity after St Charles elected to field, the Knights battled their way to 231/9 in 50 overs, thanks largely to half-centuries from Thomas Oosthuizen and Luc Boyall.
Opening batsman Oosthuizen provided a solid foundation, striking eight fours and two sixes in a patient 64 from 79 deliveries. Boyall, who was recently named in the South Africa U18 hockey team for the FIH Fives World Cup in December, top-scored with 69 from 107 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes.
The pair combined for the innings’ biggest partnership, adding 72 runs to help Northwood post a competitive total.
Ryan Clarke led the St Charles attack with 3/43 from nine overs, while his new-ball partner Connor Vogt claimed 2/12 in three. Kaiyuran Naidoo also impressed, conceding only 27 runs in his 10 overs and dismissing Boyall.
St Charles made a promising start to their reply, with Owen Widdows and Christiaan Prinsloo putting on 65 for the first wicket over 18.2 overs. However, once Widdows departed for 21, caught by James Searle off Keegan Reeves, the innings unravelled.
Prinsloo followed after making 47 from 86 deliveries, including six fours, and the visitors lost their remaining nine wickets for just 45 runs as Saints slumped to 110 all out in the 40th over.
Northwood’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding, which had served them so well at the North-South T20, proved decisive once again.
Hamza Amla spearheaded the attack with an excellent 4/26 from 10 overs, while Luc Boyall produced the remarkable figures of 2/2 in four overs. Cameron White claimed 2/15 from seven, and Reeves added 1/13 from seven to ensure St Charles never recovered from their middle-order collapse.
