Maritzburg College didn’t just beat Pretoria Boys High on Goldstone’s on Saturday – they dismantled them with a display of precision, power, and ruthless efficiency that left the visitors reeling and the scoreboard groaning under the weight of points.
Coming into the clash, Boys High’s record of three wins and two losses suggested they would offer stern resistance. Instead, they ran into a Red, Black, and White tidal wave. College, clinical and composed, stormed to a staggering 61-5 victory that underlined their pedigree in emphatic fashion.
The foundation for the demolition was laid up front. College’s forwards dominated the set pieces, with the scrum, in particular, proving a rich source of front-foot ball. That dominance translated into time and space, and, when afforded those luxuries, the home side’s backs were irresistible.
By halftime, the contest was effectively over. College had surged into a 40-5 lead, leaving Boys High shellshocked and searching for answers they would never find.
From the outset, the hosts imposed themselves. Their opening try arrived straight out of the coaching manual: a series of controlled pick-and-goes softened the defence before the ball was shifted wide. A sliver of space was all scrumhalf Dom du Toit needed. He darted through, dotted down, and, moments later, added the extras for a 7-0 lead inside four minutes.
The pressure didn’t relent. With quick ball and relentless tempo, College kept Pretoria Boys High pinned back. Eightman Rory Stanton was next to strike, latching onto a flat pass before stepping sharply off his right foot to beat the last defender. After nine minutes, it was already 14-0.
To their credit, Boys High found a brief response. A loose pass from College gifted Ayabonga Mabuza an opportunity, and the winger needed no second invitation, racing down the left touchline to score in the corner. It was a moment of opportunism, but it would prove to be their only meaningful contribution to the scoreboard.
From there, it was one-way traffic.
College struck back with intent, and Olwethu Kosani produced one of the moments of the match, slicing through three defenders on a dazzling 40-metre run to the line. Du Toit converted, and the scoreboard ticked steadily upward.
Defensively, Boys High began to fray. Missed tackles became a recurring theme, and, against a side as sharp as College, that was a costly flaw. Each error was punished.
Flyhalf Liyema Tsoko added his name to the scoresheet with a well-taken try under the posts, and Du Toit’s reliable boot pushed the lead beyond three converted tries. Then came a demonstration of forward muscle: a powerful lineout drive, with the backs joining the surge, ended with hooker Theo Boshoff crashing over. Again, Du Toit made no mistake.
By the break, College had racked up 40 points, their dominance complete. Even a rare miss from Du Toit – following a beautifully constructed counterattack finished by Caleb Scheepers after a slick offload – did little to disrupt their rhythm.
The second half followed a similar script.
Du Toit, who controlled proceedings with authority, added a second try to his tally and continued his metronomic work from the tee. His accuracy turned opportunities into maximum returns, steadily inflating College’s advantage.
The home side added two more tries to complete the scoring. Brent Smith sliced through to add another five points shortly after the hour mark, and, with time winding down, Lwanzo Vyambwera added the finishing touch.
Du Toit’s eighth successful conversion capped a remarkable individual performance. The College scrumhalf finished with an eye-catching 26 points, a fitting reflection of both his influence and his precision.
For Pretoria Boys High, it was a sobering afternoon. Aside from Mabuza’s opportunistic try, they were second best in every department, unable to establish any foothold against a side that combined forward dominance with backline flair.
For Maritzburg College, however, it was close to a complete performance – a statement victory built on structure, executed with skill, and finished with a clinical edge.
Taking a look at the big picture, College dominated at the upper levels of the open teams, and put together a clean record from 1st XV to 9th XV.
Boys High picked up a hard-fought win in the u16A match and also won the u14A game, but they claimed only three wins in total, while the u16B teams drew 20-20.
