CRICKET

Kearsney College and Westville Boys’ High were denied a result by afternoon rain and mist on the AH Smith Oval, in Botha’s Hill, on Saturday. When the match was abandoned, Westville was just 13 runs short of victory with four wickets in hand.

Having won the toss, Kearsney elected to bat first, but their innings never fully came together. They began promisingly, though, as Jason de Gryse and Rivaan Moodley put on 31 for the first wicket, followed by a 43-run partnership between Moodley and Asher Hollister for the second wicket.

Hollister stroked 28 from 28 balls, striking four boundaries, before being run out. Moodley followed soon after, also for 28, but off 56 deliveries, and Kearsney suddenly slid from 74/1 to 75/4.

Cole Young offered some resistance with a well-compiled 33 off 46 balls, featuring two fours and a six, while Daniel Miskey added 16, but the rest of the batting line-up failed to fire, with the hosts being dismissed for 146 in 38.2 overs.

For Westville, opening bowler Dayalan Boyce impressed with 3/25 in 7.1 overs, while left-arm spinner Ewan du Toit continued his fine form with 2/30 in eight.

In reply, Westville lost Aaron Rasmussen early, but Du Toit and Kyle McGough steadied the innings, taking the total to 30 before McGough was dismissed for 17.

Du Toit was, then, joined by Seth Simpson, and the pair seized control with a fluent 47-run stand off just 46 balls.

Du Toit’s composed 30 from 46 deliveries, which included five boundaries, ended via a sharp run out by Moodley, but Simpson continued to push the pace, striking seven fours in a brisk 35 from 31 balls. When he and Tristin Delvin (13) fell in quick succession, Westville had slipped to 90/5 in the 21st over.

However, Liam de Villiers, with 23 off 20, and Misbah Nair, with an unbeaten 15, rebuilt the innings, adding 36 from 30 balls before De Villiers was bowled by Michael Groom.

With Westville 134/6 and closing in on victory, the weather intervened, forcing an early end to proceedings.

Left-arm paceman Litha Gonya led the Kearsney attack with tidy figures of 2/21 from seven overs, but the elements, rather than the bowlers, had the final say.

WATER POLO

Northwood Stayers

Kearsney

A very young Kearsney College team put together a good run at the Northwood Stayers Water Polo Tournament, dominating in the group stage of the event before coming up short against the eventual champions, Clifton College, in the semi-finals.

That left Kearsney with a showdown against their neighbours, Westville Boys’ High, for third place. Westville had cruised to a big 7-1 win over Clifton earlier in the competition, but Kearsney claimed third place with a 10-8 victory.

Three players reached milestones during the tournament, with Max Mills, James Whatmore, and Rourke Stacey all winning their 50th caps.
