CRICKET

The Maritzburg College 1st XI visited Glenwood‘s Dixon’s Field on Saturday for a 50-overs-a-side clash. Under overcast skies, the visitors were sent out to bat as the home side sought to take advantage of a wicket that suggested it would assist the bowlers.

College openers, Daniel Nadasan and Kyle de Bruyn, had other plans, however, and they put their heads down and grafted, putting on 56 for the first wicket before Nadasan was dismissed for 26.

Following his departure, Glenwood made inroads through their spin attack, with College slipping to 83/4 after 23 overs as three wickets tumbled for only one run. They included De Bruyn, who made 34 from 56, with three fours and a six.

The Green Machine must have had thoughts of running through the rest of the Maritzburg College batting line-up, but Karl Dedekind and Sphamandla Dzanibe stopped them in their tracks. They added 124 for the fifth wicket from 132 balls before Dedekind fell for 62. It had taken him 60 balls, six of which he struck for four, with one other being deposited over the boundary.

Dzanibe went on to finish on 56 not out from 85 deliveries. That included five fours and a six.

After 50 overs, College had totalled 235/9.

Esihle Gasa was the pick of the Glenwood bowlers, snaring 4/33 from his 10 overs.

The home side’s run chase never truly got going. They lost two batsmen to Reece Willson‘s opening spell and College’s spinners then tied them down, with Nathan Pembridge removing two more, to take his tally for the year to 50 wickets. After 25 overs, Glenwood had crawled to 44/4.

With rain threatening and the sky darkening, College’s bowlers pushed hard to complete their 50 overs. Incredibly, the last 15 overs took just 35 minutes, and Glenwood was limited to only 134/9, leaving College the winners by a comfortable 101-run margin.

Left-arm seamer, Sphamandla Dzanibe, captured 4/15 to complete an outstanding all-round performance.

Predictably, Maritzburg College won all four of the basketball matches. However, it should be noted that Glenwood, while well beaten, has undoubtedly improved over recent seasons.

They used to be a long way off the pace, but the gap has closed, and it continues to close.
