While there was plenty of action over the weekend, with many schools’ teams involved in festivals, Clifton College and St Charles College met in a traditional array of fixtures. The spotlight, though, belonged to Clifton’s u16 water polo team, who powered their way to the Nick Rey Water Polo Tournament title at DHS in impressive fashion.

In 2024, Clifton’s u15 water polo team lifted the KZN Top 10 title, dominating their opposition. Over the weekend, a year on, the Clifton u16 team demonstrated similar mastery of their opposition in claiming the Nick Rey title.

They played nine and won nine. The closest any team came to Clifton was Westville Boys’ High, whom Clifton beat 7-4 in the quarterfinals. The next closest results was a 9-4 win over Affies.

In the semi-finals and final, Clifton scored emphatic wins over Affies and Kearsney respectively, beating both by 6-1 margins.

CRICKET

At the Riverside Sports Club, the Clifton 1st XI scored a composed win over the St Charles 1st XI.

Clifton also picked up an impressive win in the u15 clash, but the remainder of the results tilted the way of Saints.

BASKETBALL

On the basketball court, St Charles dominated. The Pietermaritzburg school has long been one of the province’s powers in the game, and often one of the best in the country, and they showed off enviable depth to make a clean sweep of the results.

In the game of the day, Saints edged out Clifton by only four points in the u15A clash.
