KZN football round-up, 6 September 2025

10 September 2025

The primary focus of football action around KZN was on the Jody Momplé Cup over the weekend, where Michaelhouse went back-to-back as champions after edging out Maritzburg College in a penalty shootout in the final.

That meant that some first teams weren’t in traditional derby action, but there was a deep menu of entertaining fixtures for all other sides.

Michaelhouse vs Hilton College

There was plenty of action between Michaelhouse and Hilton, with 22 matches being played.

‘House enjoyed the edge in the open age group matches, while matters titled ever so slightly Hilton’s way at u16 level. By a similarly tight margin, Michaelhouse got the better of the u15 games, and they came out ahead in the seven u14 clashes.

Hilton won the u16A and u15A matches, while ‘House took the u14A honours.

Overall, Michaelhouse won 11 matches, Hilton won six, and five were drawn.

Maritzburg College vs Northwood

It’s a pity that we didn’t get to see Maritzburg College in action against Northwood. The 2025 season has seen the Knights engineer a remarkable turnaround. From flirting with relegation from the Mancosa KZNHSFA Coastal A-League, to playing outstanding winning football week after week, these have been exciting times for the Durban school.

College lifted the Mancosa KZNHSFA Inland A-League title, but they’ve lacked the consistency of recent years, and they suffered the heartbreak of going down in the Jody Momplé Cup final to Michaelhouse on Sunday.

The Red, Black, and White ruled the open age group games, but the u16 matches went, mostly, Northwood’s way. Slight advantage to College at u15 level, and slight advantage to Northwood in the u14 games.

Overall, Maritzburg College picked up eight wins, Northwood won five matches, and five ended in draws.
