St Charles College visited Johannesburg for a derby, featuring rugby and hockey matches, against St Stithians College on Friday and Saturday. The competition was keen, with most matches being evenly contested in both sports.
RUGBY
On the rugby field, the Pietermaritzburg Saints claimed seven wins to the four of the Johannesburg Saints, with St Charles taking four hard-fought victories in the open age group. Unfortunately for Craig Dwyer’s charges, it was the 1st XV that went down to a St Stithians team that has enjoyed a strong season.
St Stithians also came out on top in the u6A game, but St Charles won a hard-fought arm wrestle in the u15A clash and powered their way to a lopsided victory in the u14A match.

HOCKEY
The St Stithians 1st XI has a legitimate claim to being a top 10 team in South Africa in 2025, maybe even top five, and their quality showed when they outplayed a game St Charles 8-3 in a Hyundai Friday Nite Lights fixture.
The locals also picked up victories in the u16A and u14A matches, but those were tight.
Overall, St Stithians recorded five wins, St Charles won four matches, and three contests ended 2-2.
If it was tight competition that the schools were after, they hit the jackpot. Add everything together, both rugby and hockey, and St Charles won 11 matches, St Stithians nine, and three were drawn.
