RUGBY

St Charles College hosted Glenwood High on Old Orchards on Saturday. Saints won 32-19 on Dixon’s in 2024, but the Green Machine was intent on returning the favour.

With coach Craig Dwyer already dealing with injury problems, St Charles was not quite at full strength and Glenwood was ready to take advantage of the that. The visitors seized the momentum early in the contest, controlling possession, and turning that into a 17-0 lead at the break.

The Saints’ efforts were not helped by playing with 14 players and, at one stage, 13 players, during the match.

Even with a numerical disadvantage, their big 8th-man Raphael Ajibade (feature photo, Justin Waldman Sports Photography), an exciting runner, especially when he gets into space in the open field, was hauled down just shy of the try line, and that, unfortunately for the home side, was as close as they came to scoring.

Glenwood proved to be more clinical and added a further 21 points to their tally to come away with a 38-0 victory and a solid start to the season.

They’ll face a stiff challenge on Friday at Westville Boys’ High, who beat Hilton College in their opener, while St Charles will head to the Western Cape to participate in the Wynberg Boys’ High Rugby Festival.

Most of the matches went the way of Glenwood, but there was a notable win by the St Charles u14A side, who recorded a hard-fought five-point win.

HOCKEY

On the Astro, Glenwood claimed a 2-0 victory in the 1st XI match.

It has been tough sledding for the Durban school for the past couple of years. However, the improvement has been clear to see, and, on Saturday, that brought them a win. Krian Jugoo was the hero for the visitors, scoring both their goals.

Glenwood recorded victories in the 1st XI, u16A and u14A matches, but St Charles, quite convincingly, won the remainder of the games, exhibiting greater depth.

While Glenwood won the big ones, Saints bagged eight wins to the Durbanites’ three.
