CRICKET

Two days after a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Michaelhouse in the Tuskers 100-Baller final, Hilton College seemed poised for another win when they bowled out their great rivals for just 113 on the Hart-Davis Oval on Saturday. But Michaelhouse had other plans. With a disciplined bowling performance, they dismissed Hilton for 99, clinching a narrow, hard-fought victory.

The defining innings of the match came from Michaelhouse’s William Russon, who scored 49 off 143 balls, including just one boundary. His gritty knock, more than doubling the next highest score in the game, was the difference between the teams. Hilton’s Alex Pitman, with 24, was the closest challenge, but Russon’s patient batting proved to be the match-winner.

Both teams struggled for runs, with Michaelhouse managing just 2.4 runs per over and Hilton slightly slower at 2.12. Despite this, Russon’s determination shone through, supported by Graydon Leslie, who made a useful 22.

The only meaningful partnerships came from Russon and Leslie, adding 38 for the third wicket, and a crucial 10th-wicket stand of 16 between Russon and Liam O’Dwyer, which pushed Michaelhouse to 113 all out.

Hilton’s bowlers, led by Sechaba Gude (3/23) and Luke Campbell (2/14), did their best to restrict the score. However, chasing the low total proved difficult for Hilton.

Their reply started cautiously, with openers Luke Wilson and Alex Pitman putting on 31 in 10.4 overs before Pitman fell for 24. That triggered a mini collapse, with Hilton losing their next three wickets for just three runs. At 34/3 in the 16th over, their hopes of victory dimmed.

A brief recovery saw Ben Erasmus and Robert Burman add 19 for the fourth wicket, but a fresh collapse left Hilton on 58/6 in the 27th. Despite a brief stand of 17 runs between Obakeng Motsepa and David Hill, Hilton slipped again, falling to 79/8, still needing 35 runs to win.

In the end, a superb spell from Ben Heuer, who finished with 3/15, spurred Michaelhouse to the win. He was well supported by Jean-Luc Rey (2/13) and Rendani Nonge (2/9).
